Do you ever wonder if your cat feels relaxed and safe with you and in your home? Here are some easy ways to spot that they do! I personally love the slow blink - it happens so much in our home of 15 cats that my wife and I find ourselves slow blinking at each other. Maybe we are turning into cats? :) As always, if you have any questions, drop them in the comments or make an appointment at the link in bio! .

A get a lot of DMs from friends and clients asking if their cats are playing or fighting. I made a new blog post all about the differences and how to easily tell the two apart! Hopefully this video can also help shed light on the matter with real life examples from our own home. Check out the blog on my website (link in bio!) and drop any comments or questions in the comments below. Happy playing, and don’t get too much fur in your mouth! :) .

Full disclosure : we live with 15 (yes, fifteen) cats. While we have a large space with a catio and lots of enrichment for all, inter-cat relationship issues definitely pop up. Recently things seemed to be escalating so I went back to a tool I hadn’t used since I was doing my Masters degree in animal behavior and conservation : the behavior and relationship matrix. Mapping and color coding the dynamics between all of our cats really shed some VERY bright lights on what was going on in our home, who needed help and support, who needed medication adjustments and who needed some time to cool off. Our home is much more peaceful and happy now as a result! If your multi-cat home is experiencing inter-cat tension or aggression, consider making a matrix of your own, and/or reaching out to a behavior professional for help. Drop any questions you might have in the comments! .

A lot of the “bad behavior” I see in cats isn’t about the cat at all - it’s about the environment we’ve created for them.

Cats are wired to hunt, problem-solve, and work for their food. When those needs aren’t met, that energy doesn’t disappear - it gets redirected into things we don’t like.

Biting. Attacking. Chaos at 2am!

Not because your cat is “bad.”
Because they’re understimulated.

The good news? This is one of the most fixable behavior issues I see.

I wrote a full blog post breaking this down (and how to start helping your cat right away), which you can find on my website!

Even if your cat doesn’t read the news on a daily basis, they might still suffer from anxiety! Providing exercise, hiding spots, high perches and intellectual stimulation are all good ways to help your feline keep calm and carry on (or whatever). Check out my blog post about feline stress and anxiety on my website (link in bio) for an in depth look at the topic as well as a loooooong list of solutions! .

Your cat wants to play every day! But they def do not want to play long, overly involved board games with you. Try a flirt toy (the name for wand toys with stuff at the end), tossing a paper ball, or anything interactive you can do with your cat to get them moving and running! It will be good for BOTH of your hearts and help stave off any anxiety and possible behavior issues (for you too! We don’t want YOU peeing on the couch either). At least 20 minutes a day makes for a happy, healthy kitty 🐈💛.

Several months ago we took in several month old kittens who were very very sick - after a few hospital visits it was determined that they had coccidia and URIs. A few months of relatively extreme treatment later (cleaning their holding area with ammonia, new litterboxes daily, wearing PPE while in the room with them, 2-3x daily meds and supportive care, etc) we have amazing, happy and healthy 4 month old kittens who need adoption! Elvi and Tubs are rambunctious boys who LOVE to play and are highly food motivated. 🙂 They are FIV/FEV negative, have had both rounds of FVRCP shots and will need to be neutered and have rabies shots after 6 months of age. We love them SO MUCH but as we have 11 cats of our own, we are looking for an understanding, caring and supportive home for these amazing boys. They love other cats, playing, Churu treats and pats. Please comment or dm me if you're interested in meeting them! (photos at the end of how they arrived to us). Please share if you can!

The first part of a series on pet loss and grief is out now on my cat behavior podcast, Hiss and Tell Podcast. While not a cheerful topic by any means, it’s unfortunately something I know a lot about and so do my guests, Joelle Andrés and Morgan Krug. So many of Steve’s followers requested an episode about grief, and in this one we discuss our personal stories and strategies for dealing with loss. Next time I’ll be speaking with a pet loss counselor. Feel free to share this with anyone you know going through this difficult, and often disenfranchised experience. 💛

Joelle Andres, human extraordinaire, is a school administrator by day, dog mom by night. Armed with dual masters in special education and cognitive neuroscience (and an advanced degree in school leadership), she fearlessly goes where Bastian tells her to go. Morgan Krug, dog behavior consulta

Episode 4 of my cat behavior podcast, Hiss and Tell Podcast, just dropped! It’s all about cat rescue, TNR and community cat work, with two amazing rescuers Stacy Attenberg and Suse Göricke. You can stream Hiss and Tell on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube (both podcasts and video), Amazon, etc and stream of watch it via our website, linked here! I’m VERY open to any comments, suggestions or constructive criticism so please leave your thoughts in the comments 🙂

Suse is a rescuer, TNR practitioner, (medical) foster, socializer, and colony caretaker in Brooklyn.
