Carol worked the Tuesday and Saturday shifts at that shelter for nine years, and on her last one she asked to do the kennel walk alone.

She's 66. Her knees finally made the concrete floors impossible, and she'd put off telling anybody for months because she didn't want the goodbye to become a thing.

The dog everybody already knew about was Duke.

He's a pointer mix, gray in the face now, and he'd been there three years after a hoarding case brought in 40 dogs at once and scattered most of them to rescues around the state. Duke was the one nobody took. Skittish with men, fine with women, bad with cats, and old enough that the paperwork always said senior, which is its own kind of sentence at a county shelter.

Carol walked him every shift she worked.

She didn't apply to adopt him. People asked her about that constantly, and she had one answer, which was that she lived in a 55 and older complex with a 25 pound weight limit and Duke was closer to 60.

She looked into moving twice. Neither time worked out.

So she did what she could do, which was show up twice a week for nine years and make sure one dog in that building had somebody who came back on a schedule.

The last Tuesday, she asked the shift lead if she could take him out by herself.

That's not normally how it works. Volunteers go in pairs for the difficult dogs, and Duke still qualified as one with new people. The shift lead made an exception.

Carol knelt down at his gate the way she had a thousand times before.

This time she stayed there a while.

She put both hands on his face and he leaned into them with his full weight the way he always did, and she has said since that she didn't cry until she was back in her car in the parking lot, because she didn't want the last thing he felt from her to be that.

What happens to him now, she still doesn't know.

The shelter has other volunteers who walk him, and the coordinator has told her he's doing fine, and Carol says fine is a word people use so you'll stop asking.

She checks the shelter's online listing most weeks to see if his photo is still up.

It still is.

Do you think a shelter dog remembers the people who came back for him?
