BUTTON UPDATE 1/16 🤍
So many of you have reached out with ideas and experiences about what might be happening with Button’s eyes. There were a lot of solid theories, but we now believe we understand the real cause, and it’s heartbreaking.
When Button was first found, she was hanging upside down from a tree, tied by her feet.
Our vets believe she was like that long enough for extreme pressure to build in her eyes, causing them to rupture and detach. Despite every intervention to try to save them, the right eye has developed an infection underneath that cannot be cleared without surgery.
The left eye has a very slim chance of being saved, but we don’t believe she will ever be able to see from it, and keeping it could put her at greater risk of pain and accidental injury.
Another challenge is that Button is very young, possibly only about 8 weeks old.
Her tiny body has been through unimaginable trauma.
And yet, she is stable.
Her bloodwork looks good.
She is sweet, curious, and full of life.
Being blind is hard, especially for a prey animal, but we have witnessed blind bunnies thrive with the right care. Our team works to make decisions based not on emotion or heroics, but on the life we believe each animal can truly live.
Surgery for Button is high risk.
But without it, she has no chance.
With it, she has a chance to heal, and just be a little different.
And we are completely okay with different.
Our vet team is consulting with exotic specialists across the state, and the current plan is to move forward with surgery this Tuesday.
Thank you for loving Button with us and trusting us to fight for her future 🤍
