Gardening Tips and Tricks

Let's clear my name once and for all, because I might be the most misunderstood animal in America.

I'm the Virginia opossum. And here's my real résumé:

🩸 THE RABIES MYTH: My body temperature runs too LOW for the rabies virus to thrive. Rabid opossums are extraordinarily rare — far rarer than in raccoons, skunks, or bats. That "aggressive" open-mouth hiss with 50 teeth showing? Pure theater. I'm all bluff.

💀 "PLAYING" DEAD: I don't play anything. When terror maxes out, I FAINT — involuntarily. I collapse, drool, release a co**se smell from glands, and my body goes stiff. I can stay in this coma-state from minutes to hours, and I have NO control over it. It's not acting. It's fainting with special effects.

🐍 SNAKE-PROOF: I'm largely immune to pit viper venom — rattlesnakes, copperheads, cottonmouths. Scientists study my blood to develop antivenom. I EAT venomous snakes. You're welcome.

🦟 THE CLEANUP CREW: Ticks, cockroaches, rats, mice, slugs, snails, carrion, rotten fruit, and yes — venomous snakes. I'm a walking sanitation service. (You may have heard I eat "5,000 ticks a season" — that famous study has been challenged, so I won't oversell it. But groom myself constantly I do, and my menu genuinely is your pest list.)

🍼 THE MARSUPIAL THING: I'm America's ONLY marsupial. My babies are born the size of honeybees, crawl into my pouch, and later ride my back like a furry school bus.

What I ask of you this fall:
✅ If I'm in your yard at night — let me work. I'm transient; I move on in a few days.
✅ Secure trash and pet food (that's what invited me, not malice)
✅ Check before moving brush piles; slow down driving at night — cars are my #1 killer
✅ See me "dead" by the road with no injuries? I might be fainted. Give me space.

I'm not pretty by your standards.

But I'm the neighbor who eats your pests, can't easily catch rabies, and faints when scared.

Be honest: you've had worse neighbors.

If you have dogs or cats -- YOU have to stop letting them "be born" unwanted to suffer & die painful deaths. If you have animals that "you" didn't get spayed/neutered, even though there are low-cost or even no-cost spay/neuter services, don't blame the shelters who are "forced" to deal with what you have done!
Their pain, suffering & deaths are on "YOU" not the shelters or rescues. -- Of course, the same goes for pups/dogs. Stop the constant, unending killing, will you please??!!

This is the BEST and one-and-only true way to become a No-Kill Nation by providing low- or no-cost Spay/Neuter and food to their owners! Congrats, New York—I can only pray the rest of the country follows your lead!

New York City just made a decision that speaks to something really important: no one should have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding a beloved pet.
The city approved $1.5 million in new funding for animal welfare, and it's being put toward something meaningful. Half of it will launch New York City's first municipal pet food pantry through the Department of Social Services. This is huge because it means families facing financial hardship won't have to surrender their companions to shelters just to get by.
The other $750,000 is expanding free and low-cost spay and neuter services by 50%, giving rescue groups and animal care organizations across the city the resources they need to help even more animals.
It's a reminder that when we invest in keeping pets and their families together, we're not just helping animals — we're keeping homes whole and communities stronger.

He probably wouldn’t mention your job, your achievements, or how successful you became.
He would tell a very different story.
CHAPTER ONE: THE PERSON WHO ALWAYS CAME BACK.
You left the house countless times.
I never really understood where you went.
But I learned something about you very quickly:
No matter where life took you…
you always came back to me.
And that was enough for me to trust you with my whole heart.
CHAPTER TWO: THE PERSON WHO THOUGHT I DIDN’T NOTICE.
I noticed when your voice sounded different.
I noticed when your smile wasn’t quite real.
I noticed the nights you were quieter than usual.
You never had to explain anything to me.
I just stayed a little closer.
That was my way of saying,
“I’m here.”
CHAPTER THREE: THE PERSON WHO MADE ORDINARY DAYS FEEL IMPORTANT.
You probably don’t remember every walk we took.
Every morning we spent together.
Every time you scratched behind my ears without even thinking about it.
But I do.
Because my favorite memories were never the extraordinary ones.
They were the ones where nothing happened…
except that I was with you.
CHAPTER FOUR: THE PERSON EVERYONE ELSE SAW DIFFERENTLY.
The world knew your name.
Your responsibilities.
Your mistakes.
Your strengths.
I knew none of those things.
To me, you were simply the person whose footsteps I could recognize anywhere.
The person I would choose in a room full of people.
Every single time.
CHAPTER FIVE: THE PERSON WHO GAVE ME A PLACE IN THIS WORLD.
You might say you gave me a home.
But I would write it differently.
A home is just walls and a roof.
You gave me somewhere I belonged.
Somewhere my bowl had a place.
My paws had a path.
And I never had to wonder where I was meant to be.
CHAPTER SIX: THE PERSON WHO NEVER REALIZED HOW MUCH THEY MEANT TO ME.
You probably thought you were simply taking care of a dog.
Feeding me. Walking me. Keeping me safe.
But from where I stood…
you were the center of everything.
My mornings started with you.
My best moments included you.
And wherever you were…
that was where I wanted life to happen.

And if I had to write the final line of your biography…
I wouldn’t write about what you owned.
Or what you accomplished.
Or whether the world remembered your name.
I would simply write:
“I got to spend my life loving this person.
And I would choose them all over again.”
