It’s going to be a great season! This year we are hoping to double our production from about 3,000 pounds of food a year to 6,000 and we need all the help we can get bringing in the harvest. It’s a great time together and then we usually work up a big appetite and go out to eat afterwards. We’d love to see you there! 106 Gallatin Pk N

Almost planting time at Roots Urban Farm! Cover crop of winter rye, crimson clover, and daikon radish has been crimped, tarped, and lays decomposing to release its nutrients for our 2026 crops.

Huge thank you to Trevecca Urban Farm and the Treecycle program from coming out to plant 2 peach trees, 2 plum trees, and 2 pear trees at Roots Urban Farm today! These trees would have cost us a good bit of money if we bought them ourselves. So, we are very thankful to receive these trees as a gift and a blessing that we hope to pass along to all those we will have the opportunity to feed in 2026 and beyond!

Our last big service group of the summer has come and gone! They were from West Chicago area from and they were an amazing group to work with! They stayed in the church building with is this week. They moved thousands of pounds of block and gravel and gear for our aquaponic/hydroponic systems. Moved fish into their new homes. They built a compost screener that runs off an old sawzall. They painted and organized the shed. They fertilized, water, w**ded, planted, picked, mowed, and on and on. It’s been so good to partner with and receive all the help they have steered our way! It’s been such a blessing to Roots Ministries and our community! Now I get to go out with Mission Discovery this week to Ashville, NC to meet new groups serving there this week, lead worship, help with hurricane cleanup, and help a church there build a garden and a food forest. All the prayers appreciated!

Hey, thank you so much for sending two groups for two days last week and for helping so much at Roots Urban Farm. They w**ded, they watered, they laid down cardboard and hay mulch as a w**d barrier, they planted flowers and companion plants, and they did it all with a good attitude. I’m very thankful we got to collaborate!

Austin Lanier has joined the ranks of the very elite few that I have trained to operate the BCS walk behind tractor. It might look like an overgrown tiller but it is a lot like a Kitchenaid mixer with lots of attachments that you can hook onto the PTO link. What you see Austin using is a power harrow. It stirs the soil instead of flipping it over, like a tiller. This way you don’t invert the soil and bring latent w**d seeds to the surface. I’m so thankful to have amazing volunteers like the Laniers that come out every Saturday to help pick, wash, weigh, w**d, water, and maintain the garden. We got a late start due to rain this year, but things are coming along nicely! If you’re in the area and want to help on Saturdays, we typically meet from 9 to noon every week. We’d love to see you out here!
