Animals were abandoned at our gates twice in the last 24 hours.
We recognize that times are tough. We know the need in our community is greater than what shelters can always accommodate. But leaving an animal outside, without information and protection, is not in the best interest of the animal or the safety of our community. And it's illegal.
When an animal is abandoned, we are legally required to follow an intake process. That means the animal must remain in a kennel for up to 7 days before they are eligible for foster care, adoption, or further placement. This waiting period, combined with the stress of abandonment, can cause rapid decline of an animal.
You may think abandoning them at a shelter is the safest option. But when we have no history, no health records, and no context, it limits how quickly and safely we can act.
We understand circumstances change. Housing falls through. Finances tighten. Behavioral issues feel overwhelming. That’s exactly why we have resources.
We offer things like rehoming support, low-cost veterinary care, behavior assistance, landlord deposit assistance, supplemental pet food, and so much more. We want to help. And there is no shame in asking for help.
We continue to see innocent animals’ lives put at risk when a conversation could have changed the outcome. Please be humane. Contact your shelter before abandoning an animal.❤️🩹
