Most dogs are vitamin D deficient, and it could be affecting their health more than you think.

In this video, Dr. Marc Smith explains why vitamin D deficiency is so common in dogs and why diet is the only way dogs can get vitamin D. Unlike humans, dogs cannot make vitamin D from sunlight, which makes dietary intake and testing especially important.

Dr. Smith shares why he recommends adding vitamin D testing during bloodwork, especially for geriatric dogs, and what improvements he commonly sees when deficient dogs are properly supplemented. These improvements can include better energy, improved coat quality, and overall better wellbeing.

If you have a senior dog or a dog dealing with chronic issues, vitamin D is one lab value you may want to discuss with your veterinarian.

What are your favorite dog breeds? 🐕

Dr. Smith likes all breeds, but Shih Tzus, Labs, and mixed breed dogs are his favorites.

His dogs, Teddy, Stella, and Georgia appreciate that!

👀 Ever wonder why pets hide their pain?

It’s instinct. In the wild, showing weakness can make you a target, so animals learn to mask pain and discomfort as a survival skill.

Pets are really good at hiding when something’s wrong… even at the vet.

Just because they’re not crying or limping doesn’t always mean they’re okay.

One of the most overlooked signs of Cushing’s disease in dogs is a voracious appetite, especially in dogs over 10.

If your older dog suddenly turns into a bottomless pit, pay attention.

Drinking more, peeing more, getting into the trash, eating mulch or leaves are all signs of Cushing’s Disease in dogs. Dr. Smith sees it all the time, and lives with it in his dog, Stella.

When appetite changes this dramatically, testing matters.

🐾 Seeing bloody or sore dog paws? It’s often seasonal.

Winter road salt and summer-hot pavement can quietly burn your dog’s paw pads.

Always rinse your dog’s paws after walking if they’ve been exposed to chemical snow melt products.

Dr. Smith explains that applying hydrocortisone cream after bringing your dog inside can help soothe irritation and promote healing in just a few days.

Can dogs eat snow? ❄️

It’s one of the most common winter questions we get this time of year.

✅ In general, small amounts of clean, fresh snow are usually okay for dogs to lick, and yes, many dogs love rolling around in it.

❎ But here’s the big warning:

If the snow has been treated with ice melt or de-icing chemicals, it’s a hard no. These products can:
😕 Irritate your dog’s mouth
🐾 Burn or dry out their paws
🤢 Cause stomach upset if ingested

Vet tip: After snowy walks, wipe down your dog’s paws (and belly) when they come inside to remove salt and chemicals.

Does your dog like to play in the snow?

How cold is too cold for cats outside?

Dr. Smith shares what decades of veterinary experience have shown him. Healthy, active cats usually handle cold weather well and know how to find shelter.

But senior cats are a different story. Older cats move less, get cold faster, and are safer indoors when temperatures drop.
