Abernathy Aviary

Abernathy Aviary Avian rescue/rehab in Tennessee! Established in 2020! Our babies are in excellent health and handfed from 4+ weeks till weaning.

Our goal isn’t just to breed, but to provide a safe haven for abandoned and rescued parakeets and cockatiels. All of our birds eat premium bird seed, fruits, vegetables, rice, beans, and have daily flight time in our indoor aviary. We are currently taking in rescues but only on an emergency basis. If you find an injured, abandoned, or neglected bird of any kind, please contact me!

Unfortunately Abernathy Aviary will be moving locations. After years of not only breeding birds, rescuing and rehabilitating wild birds, we are being forced to relocate and decease helping any wildlife since it “puts us over the 2 pet policy” (yes, even rehabilitating wildlife). Moving in we were told birds, fish, reptiles etc don’t count on our lease, only cats and dogs. But that is unfortunately changing. This makes me incredibly sad, but the decision had to be made so we don’t lose the ability to have any animals (even our dogs) since Liberty is harassing us.

I will be partnering up with Carilyn at Spirit Dancer ranch in Moorpark! If anyone would like to adopt a bird they are still available but I am temporarily handing my business over to Carilyn to help manage and profit off of since it’s her property. In under a year, we will be moving, closing on our own home, and we will resume our usual in home aviary. I am so looking forward to that! We were inspired to look for land rather then just any house…a minimum of 3 acres so we can have our own little ranch.

To those of you who came over to enjoy holding baby birds, thank you. It has been a joy seeing how happy the birds made everyone. 🙂 This isn’t over. If you enjoyed the time with our birds you can visit the ranch anytime as long as you call the ranch ahead of time! Carilyn has 90 acres of land and tons of different species. This handsome guy being my favorite! If you have horses I highly recommend contacting her regarding boarding. She has some of the cheapest prices around! She is an amazing lady with a passion for helping animals.

I will also still aid in helping transport wildlife to another rehabilitator who can help. If you are local do not hesitate to contact me regarding an injured bird. I can still help, I just can’t rehabilitate them myself anymore.

Hello everyone! As many of you know, we humanely breed parakeets and rescue birds of all species! We currently have 30 birds in our forever flock. 28 parakeets and 2 cockatiels! Each bird has their own individual personality and backstory. Many will likely never be tame due to their distrust in humans, but we take comfort in knowing we are giving them a loving home and the attention/care they deserve. If you would like to learn more about our forever flock please contact me and I will share each birds backstory!

Please understand adoption is never guaranteed. To adopt through us, we will be requesting you answer a questionnaire about proper bird care, request the dimensions (and pictures) of the cage you plan to use, and future plans if you have to move or adopt more birds! We want to make sure every bird goes to a loving home and has minimal chances of being rehomed!

I don’t want any of my birds ending up abandoned or “freed”, a horrifying new trend that many uneducated bird owners think is best to give them an amazing life. Our parakeets are different colorations that don’t naturally produce in the wild, which leaves them incredibly vulnerable to predators like hawks and falcons. Please, if you change your mind, whether it’s a week after adoption or years, contact me for a full refund.

Every bird receives daily cage free time (a minimum of 6 hours a day), quality seed, vitamins, cuttlebone, mineral block, fruits, veggies, rice, beans, and the occasional chicken egg (incredibly beneficial for their health after egg laying). Fledglings are handfed once they are 4+ weeks old for optimal bonding and taming with humans. Please understand, although I put all my effort into taming birds before adoption day, it is never guaranteed and it is very easy for them to regress in taming if you don’t continue to work with them on commands. I start out with “step up” and target training!

Hello fellow bird lovers! With the rising gas prices in Southern California I figured I would make the announcement that I can deliver birds to their forever homes. I have no problem driving to you. It is free if you are in a 10 mile radius of Port Hueneme, CA. If you are outside of that range I will give you a gas estimate for delivery! If you are further then an hour away I expect you to be comfortable with meeting halfway. I will be increasing the cost of bird adoption with transportation and gas prices in mind. I will not charge you a ridiculous amount extra - just a rough estimate on how much the transport will cost me! All of this can be discussed prior to adoption. ❤️

Parakeets are $40 each. Cockatiels are $200. Discounts are available for 4+ parakeets (cockatiels will not be discounted due to demand).

With permission from Lindy Miller, I am sharing this beautiful video of one of the babies I bred! This is Draco the parakeet. He is talking and answering questions from his new amazing owner! It’s crazy how smart these little guys are. 😍 He isn’t even a year old yet!

Just a normal day at Abernathy Aviary rescuing wild birds! Last month it was a crow, this month a seagull! 🥺 Most people don’t care enough to help these animals since there are so many of them in the wild and walk right by without a care in the world! I feel obligated to care and aid in any way I can. His wing was super broken so I wrapped it in vet tape against his body so he couldn’t break it further by freaking out in the car until we get him to the rehabilitation center today. 🥰

Please continue to help save the wild birds! ❤️ If you don’t have the time, contact us if you are local to Port Hueneme! We will absolutely help! We don’t always see injured birds unless someone else brings it to our attention. Thankfully a sweet woman that was a vet tech captured this guy so we could help!

(Those are electrolytes in the water dish, which he absolutely loves, he drank two entire dishes)

Our most recent clutch turned out absolutely beautiful! Mama Cloud did such an amazing job! I am ecstatic to say all of these beauties have been reserved and they will go to their forever homes soon! Our sweet girl on the far right is being rehomed to a kind woman that adopted from a previous clutch. We plan to keep our beautiful boy on the left, which we usually don’t do, but he has absolutely grown on me! His personality is absolutely adorable! The middle two boys are going to one of my friends mothers who adores birds as a birthday gift! I’m so happy they will be staying together forever!
