This photo expresses so much about what I love in my job. Barley was a hard puppy, and I’ve met a lot of puppies. His mom did absolutely everything right by him. She came through puppy classes, tried him in agility, and finally gave scentwork a try. He’ll be two later this month and this is everything she worked for! Scentwork gave them the opportunity to work together to become a team. To lean into a puzzle and depend on each other. It allows her to give him an outlet into something that he absolutely loves to do, and the opportunity to let him show her what his world looks like, and it has taught him that she has good and reliable feedback that’s relevant to his world and his desire to sniff all of the things.
This weekend they had an opportunity to attend their first competition together - at Nightmare on Thirteenth of all places! They ran twice and won two fourth place ribbons, and they did really well, but that wasn’t the most important thing. The most important thing is this moment that they shared afterwards. It isn’t the perfect picture, but it is the perfect moment. It’s shared joy and teamwork. It’s knowing that, ribbons or no, you trusted your dog and your dog trusts you and you’re in it together. That you both did your best and communicated through the hiccups and the chaos that comes from trialing.
If your interested in seeing what scentwork can do for your relationship with your dog we would love to have you at our upcoming Intro to Scentwork class. This class will introduce you the game that is scent work.
If you have a young puppy and are ready to start your training journey and build the foundation that can become this come join us for Adventure Pups, so your dog can go into a haunted house confident, cool, and collected - despite their surroundings.
Both classes will be held at Dawgs N Whiskers in Sandy
We can’t wait to have you!
