PSA from your friendly neighborhood dog groomer:
If you have a double coated dog, and your groomer will not shave them, this is why. As you can see from the picture, there are two different textures of hair, the straight, protective top coat and the curly, dense undercoat. The curly undercoat is what sheds when we get to warmer weather and where most of the mats form.
Shaving only cuts off the protective top coat, it does not reduce shedding or keep mats from forming.
There are other methods to reduce shedding. Routine brushing is the best way. Deshedding bath can also reduce the shedding period.
I agreed to shave this sweetie because she several bad mats and her owners life situation made them unable to keep her brushed.
