If you ever THINK something bad might happen, or KNOW your dog has a reactive history with dogs, or WONDER how an interaction might go, you should play it safe.

Taking a week to manage dog interactions sets the dogs up for proper house rules and limits any dog conflict.

We started this session with the dog shaking in fear from simply being at a park. We ended that hour with him jumping up and staying on slick surfaces. How??

➡️ Dogs who lack confidence are overwhelmed by simple situations… like being in a new setting.

➡️ When you exposure dogs to reasonably stressful situations and they come out on the other side unharmed, their tolerance for stress is higher. They feel more confident.

➡️ Now the original setting that stressed them out isn’t a big deal.

➡️ it’s literally exposure therapy. And it works slowly but surely.

When a client says “I never thought my dog could do that” it’s makes my week! That’s why we train. Making the seemingly impossible, possible.

There is a place for kids in training- it’s the rewarding. Positive reinforcement. Often times we tell our dogs “No” so often around children: lots of loud and deep vocal tones. Sometimes dogs associate the child with all the negativity so I recommend allowing kids to periodically reward the dog, either for good behavior or for no reason at all.

What I mean when I tell clients to run obedience drills when they have 5 minutes between meetings. Tires your dog out way more than an unproductive and chaotic walk and trust me, is better for both your minds!

Mental stimulation > physical in the long run.

“It came out of nowhere” is often the saying clients tell dog trainers when there’s been an incident with a bite or scuffle. My job is to empower clients to see the signs of stress or anxiety in their dog and cut the cord to it ever happening again.

This video could exist on the internet and the general public might ooh and aah at how cute it is. The dog loves the baby!! But I set up this scenario in my home to showcase the most common stress signs dogs throw:
1. Lick lipping
2. Yawning

It’s also important to note there is an element of elevation that freaks the dog out: the baby coming down from the counter.

Know your dog. Know the signs. De-escalate the situation. These two live very harmoniously together but it’s my job to set boundaries both for the dogs and the kids.

➡️ Always use a leash instead of leaving the dog’s behavior up to chance.
