Beauty's Haven - Where Life Begins, Again!

How Beauty's Haven came to be....

After surgery to remove a tumor that was nearly severing her spinal cord, Theresa Batchelor was told by her physicians that she had permanent nerve damage and would therefore, never be able to walk again. Theresa isn’t the type of person who gives up without a fight. With the supp

ort of her husband, Bob, daughter, Katie, and son, Joshua, coupled with a large measure of faith and determination, she proved the doctors wrong. After months of grueling physical therapy, she regained the use of her arms and legs. She has no sensation or feeling below her neck however, and she must look directly at her arms and legs to know where they are in relation to her body. She is an incomplete quadriplegic. Even after Theresa was able to walk again, the doctors told her to refrain from any activity that might put her at risk for additional injury and that included horseback riding! Since Theresa had loved horses since she was a small child, she was determined to move forward so she would be able to ride once again. Several weeks later, Theresa received a call informing her that a young Arabian mare had been seized by the county due to severe abuse and neglect. The county was looking for someone who would provide a good home for the mare, a home where she would be safe and could recover from her mental and physical injuries. Theresa knew in her heart that she needed the mare as much as the mare needed her. Theresa lovingly named the mare, Beauty. Soon thereafter, Theresa and Bob leased a four stall barn located on five acres not far from their home. One rescue led to another and before long, more space was needed! They decided to sell their home and purchase property in the country where they could pursue Theresa’s lifelong dream of helping horses. They settled on a 17.5 acre parcel of land near Williston, Florida. Theresa named the farm after her beloved, rescued Arabian mare - and that is how Beauty’s Haven Farm & Equine Rescue, Inc. Beauty’s Haven has quickly become a highly renowned and respected equine rescue facility with supporters from around the world.

Betsy Rose was much more than that one special horse that comes into your life - she was a teacher, friend, comic, helper, healer and a a hero. Hero’s must be brave and overcome fear and insurmountable challenges which Betsy did, with much determination and dignity. Throughout her incredible journey to overcome all odds, she taught us perseverance, courage, compassion, patience, wisdom, to never give up, and to believe.

Betsy Rose was angelic and had an incredibly strong life force about her that naturally captivated countless hearts. She was a one of a kind spirit with an aura about her that can’t be described. Before being transported to our rescue on June 14th, 2013, the examining vet found Betsy Rose down, unable to get up. She had been down for days. Humane euthanasia was recommended – she was so thin and weak. Once a horse gets down to a body condition score (BCS) of one, they usually don’t recover. When a body is deprived of nutrition, it feeds off its own fat, muscle, and then organs. Betsy Rose’s BCS was a 0.5 and the odds for her survival were next to none. But from the moment I first saw her, there was an overwhelming connection and I sensed a fierce determination in her to overcome.

Can you imagine the heartache she must have felt after being discarded like trash by those she thought loved her? The physical neglect didn’t happen overnight and it had taken a toll. Even while she lay there, dying, she was very brave and determined – she didn’t give up. I believe she knew she had a purpose and that she was holding out for the chance at a miracle, a miracle which a higher power absolutely knew would come.

I promised Betsy Rose that we would do everything we could to make all of her tomorrows everything her past should have been. And with that promise, we ventured into a realm of miraculous wonder.

Betsy Rose was, simply, the very essence of love. She was the guiding force on an incredible journey that proved it to be true that love knows no boundaries and overcomes all obstacles. Betsy’s love was rare, enduring, and eternal. She turned tears of sadness into tears of joy; trials into triumphs; and even in times of darkness, she showed us there was light. Her perseverance, determination, and courage were beyond measure. She touched countless lives around the globe, inspiring people to believe and to never give up.

Sadly, we lost Betsy Rose on December 22nd, 2017, to a condition that prevented her from being able to swallow. If one cannot swallow, they are unable to live.

True to the extraordinary spirit she had shown throughout her journey, Betsy Rose faced the end with grace. In one final, priceless gift, she looked into my eyes—those deep, soulful eyes—and seemed to say, “I understand. It’s time, and it’s okay. Believe and never give up. I’ll be with you, always." The fierce fire of determination that once burned so brightly in her eyes had softened into profound peace which led us to accept the heartbreaking decision to let her go to Rainbow Bridge. It was the last and greatest gift of love we could give to her in this realm. Her mission had been successfully accomplished and we will forever be indebted to this little mare with the flaxen mane that continues to inspire us.

PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN

Once again, 'Farrier Friday' is upon us, as caring for the hooves of our beloved equines is essential for their overall health and well-being. Sadly, last week's fundraiser yielded very few sponsors, but to those who did come forth to support this endeavor, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

We are so hoping that this week's plea for hooficare sponsors, the average cost of which is $45, will generate more interest, which will, in turn, truly make an incredible difference in the lives of Beau as well as each and every member of our little herd here at the rescue.

Please remember that all donations are greatly appreciated and no amount is ever too small. Just click on the 'Donate' button below. If you are unable to help at this time, we truly understand, but we would be forever grateful if you could share this post amongst family and friends.

Thank you all, for your love and support!

Sincerely,

Theresa

DID YOU KNOW?

Hey Everyone!

JoJo and Jazzy here, to announce the first ‘Farrier Friday’ of June! Did you know that caring for an equine’s hooves is essential for their overall health and well-being? It is vital that trimming be done every six to eight weeks to maintain proper balance, evenly distribute weight, and prevent severe, irreversible joint damage. Because we do not walk enough on hard surfaces to wear our hooves down naturally, regular trimming prevents overgrowth that causes tripping, lameness, and soft tissue strain. So, when you help sponsor a hooficure, you are actually helping us and all of our friends here at Beauty’s Haven, to stay healthy in many ways.

Since there are twenty-five plus equines here at the rescue, farrier care is quite costly (Average cost per hooficure is $45), and that is the reason we are asking for your help. Won’t you please help sponsor a hooficure for your favorite Beauty’s Haven horse, donkey, or mule by clicking on the 'Donate' button below? We all would be so very grateful!

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!

Love,

JoJo and Jazzy 💕
