I do have one story while I’m posting about this subject. Many years ago when I was ‘young and dumb’ and before I had a pigeon coop. I went to run some Pointer puppies that were probably a little older than these, but not much. I parked my truck facing East, I was going to run the pups in a big loop to the East of the truck. When I swung the box open, it was facing West. Every one jumped out of the box and ran due West (the wrong way) without ever looking back. I called and called and was completely ignored. They ran through the cover and out of site. I waited a few minutes and then I heard a woman screaming. I knew that wasn’t good. I ran towards the screams until I came upon the scene. It was an older woman, who was hanging clothes out on a line. Those pups were ripping clothes down and running every direction. Then they would come back and grab something else. That poor woman was screaming and swinging and those pups thought it was the best game ever. I started grabbing puppies, and dragging them off, but I didn’t have enough hands. I finally got a hold of the worst offenders and Thank God, the others came with me. I’m certain if that woman had a gun she would have shot those puppies and me too! She was giving it to me pretty good, but I wasn’t waiting around to listen!

My version of ‘flocking puppies’ and my version of Classical Conditioning. These Pointer puppies are 3, months old. They have had no ‘recall’ training, they are too young for an ecollar and I don’t have them on a check cord. I’m using a tethered pigeon to keep these pups going with me and coming around when I call to them. While walking them through light cover, I occasionally call to them and then tease them with the pigeon. They pay attention to me and where I’m at, they stay with me, and come when I call because they know I have the pigeon. I will use the tethered pigeon less over time and eventually eliminate it all together. The pups should continue to stay with me and come when called, just as Pavlov’s dogs still salivated at the sound of the bell, even when there was no food. Of course, I will still do some recall and pattern training, but it will be easy due to this foundation. Turning a bunch of Pointer puppies loose and trying to run them with no tool like this to keep them with me would quickly devolve into a goat rodeo. I know, because I’ve done it. This drill really has nothing to do with pointing, that is just some extra fun. I teased them with the pigeon and let them point more than usual today, because I had Angela Crockett-Howard with me to take pictures and videos. Two of these pups are ufd. Dale Smith
