When disaster strikes, our four-legged family members need help too. ❤️🐾

Kerens K9 Board & Train is collecting donations of dog food and other pet supplies for families and rescue efforts affected by the flooding in Upshur County and the surrounding counties. We will also be contributing supplies of our own.

Items needed include:
🐶 Dog food (opened or unopened, if still safe and usable)
🥫 Canned dog food
🦴 Treats
🥣 Food and water bowls
🦮 Leashes, collars, and harnesses
🛏️ Blankets and pet beds
🧴 Pet shampoo and cleaning supplies
🦴 Crates and carriers
🧻 Puppy pads and other essential pet supplies

Happy 4th of July from the Kerens K9 crew! 🇺🇸🐾

While many of you are out enjoying fireworks tonight, we'll be hanging out with our boarders and training dogs making sure they have a safe, calm evening.

One thing we want everyone to remember: even the best-trained dogs can panic during fireworks. A solid recall doesn't always beat fear. Tonight is not the night to test your dog's off-leash reliability.

Keep your pups inside, double-check collars and tags, make sure gates and doors are secure, and if your dog is prone to anxiety, get them settled before the fireworks start.

For our Kerens K9 families—don't worry! ❤️ Our boarding and training pups are being closely monitored, getting lots of reassurance, and spending the evening in a safe environment. Their comfort and safety are always our top priority.

🐾 **Three new trainees checked in today!** 🐾

First up is Cosmo, who is back with us after graduating from our Puppy Program! She's now here for our Advanced Off-Leash Obedience Program, and if her smile is any indication, she was very excited to be back. (Tiffany may have been just as excited to have her back! ❤️)

We're also welcoming Utah and Scout to the Kerens K9 family! Both are joining us for our Advanced Off-Leash Obedience Program, and we can't wait to help them build reliable off-leash skills, confidence, and real-world obedience.

We're looking forward to watching all three of these pups grow over the coming weeks. Stay tuned for training updates! 🐕🎓🐾

We’ve fallen a little behind on social media updates lately — busy season is officially in full swing and the kennel has been running at full capacity all summer long (minus our week hiatus). We honestly couldn’t be more grateful.

Between summer boarders and new training program members, we are FULL and now running a waitlist.

I haven’t had much time to showcase every dog that’s come through training (and in typical fashion I definitely didn’t get good photos of all of them), so here are a few of the good boys and girls we’ve worked with over the last month.

These trainees (minus Diesel) have all since returned home and are doing great with their families.

Stay tuned though — we’ve got 4 more starting Monday and things are staying busy. If you’ve been thinking about getting your dog into training, I’d highly recommend getting on the books early.

As always, thank you to every client who trusts us with their dogs. We don’t take it lightly. 🐾

Big shoutout to Diesel’s family for absolutely crushing his 1-week home visit with his handler.

This wasn’t just a “take him home and see how it goes” situation—this was a real evaluation step before moving into his next phase of public access training. And they showed up for it.

We work with dogs and owners from all different backgrounds, schedules, and lifestyles, and one thing we always try to be clear about is this: training doesn’t start and end at our facility. It’s a lifelong commitment and a team effort.

A lot of families do really well with that concept. But Diesel’s family took it a step further. They didn’t just maintain what we started here—they matched it, stayed consistent, and honestly exceeded what we expected from them in just one week.

That kind of follow-through makes all the difference for a dog like Diesel, and it’s exactly what sets long-term success apart from short-term progress.

Proud of this team, proud of Diesel, and excited for what’s next. We are beyond confident that this family is in it for the long haul and will succeed well after training has ended ❤️

Join us every Monday from October 5th - November 9th at Leading Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

🕕 Basic Class — 6:00 PM
🕖 Advanced Class — 7:00 PM

(Advanced class requires prior evaluation)

Our advanced class will also include field trips and real-world training opportunities to help dogs practice their skills outside the classroom environment!

Crate training has somehow gotten a bad reputation, but when it’s introduced the right way, a crate is not punishment — it’s actually one of the most helpful tools you can use with your dog.

Dogs are naturally drawn to small, den-like spaces. When a kennel is properly introduced, it becomes a safe place for rest, structure, and decompression. It helps dogs learn how to settle, regulate themselves, and be comfortable when they can’t be directly supervised.

A crate can help with:
• Preventing destructive behaviors
• Keeping puppies safe
• Supporting potty training
• Keeping small problems from becoming bigger ones
• Creating healthy boundaries
• Giving dogs a quiet space to relax
• Making vet visits, grooming, boarding, and travel much easier

The truth is, most dogs who “don’t like the crate” were never really taught how to feel comfortable in one. Maybe they were rushed into it, only put in when something went wrong, or given too much freedom before they were ready.

Freedom works best when it’s built on trust and reliability.

We don’t use crates to shut dogs down or ignore them. We use them to help build calm, confident dogs who can eventually handle more freedom in a safe and successful way.

A tired, overstimulated dog with too much freedom is often the same dog dealing with chewing, accidents, barking, anxiety, or struggling to settle.

A crate is simply a training tool — just like a leash or place command — that helps guide dogs toward better behavior and more confidence.

The goal is never to “lock your dog away.”

The goal is to help them feel safe, calm, and successful both in your home and out in the world.

Meet Diesel 🐾

Diesel joined us for advanced service dog training and public access work. He already has a foundation in task work, but like many service dogs in training, he needs help building reliability and confidence in real world environments where distractions, noise, movement, and unpredictability are everywhere.

Over the next several weeks we’ll be focusing heavily on neutrality, engagement, and safe public access behaviors. His training will include navigating stairs, restaurants, shopping carts, tight spaces, public bathrooms, automatic doors, crowded environments, and improving his brace work for his handler. Before beginning any mobility-related work, Diesel was properly evaluated by a veterinarian to ensure the work is safe and appropriate for both him and his owner.

One of the biggest misconceptions about service dogs is that a “real” service dog should never need practice in public. The truth is, public access is a skill set all on its own. Task training is only one piece of the puzzle — dogs also have to learn how to remain calm, focused, and environmentally stable in constantly changing situations. That level of reliability takes time, consistency, and exposure.

You’ll likely see Diesel out with us quite a bit over the coming weeks. Some days will look easy, some days will challenge him, and that’s exactly how learning works. Training is not about perfection overnight — it’s about building a dog that can confidently and safely support their handler in everyday life.

We’re excited to help Diesel continue growing into the dependable partner his owner needs, and we can’t wait to share parts of his journey with you all. 🖤

Cyclone wrapped up her full off-leash obedience program yesterday, and we couldn’t be more proud of how far she’s come. 🐾

Here’s a short snippet from her end-of-training session with her owner — just a small piece of everything we covered together.

One of my favorite parts of training is seeing that eagerness to work and perform. Watching it all click and seeing a dog excited to engage, listen, and succeed never gets old.

Our end-of-training sessions are a huge part of the process because training doesn’t end when your dog goes home. We make sure owners know how to properly communicate, give commands, and maintain the structure their dog has been learning with us for weeks so that success continues long after they leave.

Cyclone and her owner did awesome, and we’re excited to see them keep building on this foundation. 💪🐕
