🦔 SURVIVING THE HUMANS
A HEDGEHOG’S DIARY
DAY FIVE — THE BATHROOM BETRAYAL
Dear Diary,
Today I came face-to-face with death.
The human picked me up, examined my feet, and whispered the most terrifying words ever spoken:
“You need a little foot bath.”
That is how humans describe danger. Softly. While carrying a towel.
Before I could contact my lawyer, I was lowered into a basin of warm water.
The water reached my ankles.
My ankles, Diary.
🦔 “The water is rising.”
🐕 “She stopped pouring.”
🦔 “Because she realized what she had done.”
🐕 “It’s half an inch deep.”
🦔 “Many great disasters begin with half an inch.”
She kept saying, “You’re okay,” while washing my feet with a tiny toothbrush.
A toothbrush.
I was being scrubbed like an old cooking pot.
🦔 “Tell the world I fought courageously.”
🐕 “You can stand.”
🦔 “Heroes often can.”
🐕 “Your belly isn’t even wet.”
🦔 “The ocean does not need to swallow a sailor for him to respect its power.”
Then she found something stuck under one toenail.
She called it dirt.
I called it a personal belonging.
She removed it without permission.
Then came the towel.
I was wrapped tightly and rubbed in every direction while she announced that I was “all clean.”
Clean?
My feet no longer smelled like me.
They smelled like betrayal, with a faint hint of unscented baby soap.
🐕 “You were in the water for three minutes.”
🦔 “Time behaves differently during tragedy.”
🐕 “You tried to climb into her sleeve.”
🦔 “I was searching for higher ground.”
🐕 “Then you pooped in the towel.”
🦔 “Survivors respond to trauma in different ways.”
I was returned to my bed.
I checked all four feet.
Still attached. Emotionally changed forever.
She offered me a mealworm as if compensation could erase the memory.
I ate it.
Not because I forgave her.
Because a survivor must rebuild his strength.
Tonight I shall sleep with one eye open.
And both feet hidden.
She called it a foot bath.
I saw my entire life flash before my eyes.
