It’s been quite a while since I’ve shared any breeding plans or really talked about the future of my very small German Shepherd breeding program.
A few years ago, I quietly stepped away from dog sports. The local communities here in Georgia unfortunately took a lot of the enjoyment out of it for me, and around that same time I experienced the initial placement of Frank, something many of you may remember. It was an incredibly difficult and traumatic experience that forced me to step back and reevaluate everything moving forward.
Those who know me know that I pour absolutely everything into my dogs. They aren’t a business venture or a hobby. They’re family. Every litter is planned with months-years of thought behind it, and every puppy leaves with a piece of my heart. Watching them go has always been bittersweet, but after Frank, it became even harder.
With that said, I’ve recently begun considering breeding Bambi later this year.
Bambi is from my last litter in 2023, out of Baya and Kirk.
She represents so much of what I hoped to preserve from that pairing, both in temperament and versatility. This breeding would mean so much more to me than simply producing another litter. It would be about continuing Baya’s legacy, a dog who has changed my life in more ways than I could ever put into words.
Before I make any final decisions, though, Bambi will need to complete all of her official health testing, so this is still very tentative.
So far, her preliminary results have been very encouraging:
OFA preliminaries: Excellent hips and Normal elbows
DM and Embark: Clear by parentage
She’s exactly the kind of dog I hoped she’d become. She’s level-headed, thoughtful, confident, and possesses so many of the wonderful qualities I love in both Baya and Kirk.
I kept Bambi not only because she’s half of my heart dog, but also because I believed she had the potential to become a successful service dog, just like Baya, who has faithfully worked as my medical alert dog for chronic migraines.
I haven’t trialed or titled Bambi in any venue. Everything we’ve done together has simply been because we enjoy it. These days, I’m much happier spending time with my dogs at home and on the farm, going on outings, bike rides, swimming, and finding new ways to enrich their lives. I still have an interest in pursuing herding and the show ring with Bambi someday, but it’s not something I see myself jumping into this year.
My goals as a breeder have never changed. I’ve always wanted to preserve German Shepherds that are, first and foremost, wonderful companions. Dogs with stable minds, sound bodies, and the versatility to fit into whatever path life takes them. Dogs that can hike one day, relax on the couch the next, compete in sports if their owners choose, or devote themselves entirely to service work.
I also want to be completely transparent. If your primary goal is a puppy specifically for protection sports, this likely won’t be the litter for you. While I have every reason to believe the genetic capability is there, both Bambi and the male I’m considering are unproven in those venues, and I would never advertise something I can’t honestly stand behind.
What I do believe this pairing has the potential to produce are exceptional companions, highly versatile dogs, and what I hope will be some truly wonderful service dog prospects.
Again, nothing is set in stone, and it won’t be until Bambi completes all of her official health testing. But if everything comes together, I’d love to begin putting together a small list of families who appreciate these dogs for the same reasons I do.
As always, preference will be given to friends, family, repeat owners, and applicants with excellent references.
Thank you to everyone who has continued to support me over the years, even during my quiet seasons. It truly means more than you’ll ever know ❤️
