Monroe NC Animal Welfare Updates

It’s been a while since I posted, but there are several issues here in Union County that probably needs some discussion. First of all, there is a union county commissioners meeting this evening and change for Monroe is planning to have people come and speak to the deficiencies and animal care here in Union County. Additionally, it seems that union county has hired a new officer, who also happens to be the officer who was terminated in Salisbury when a video surfaced of him, abusing his K-9 companion.

 we are attaching information on the meeting this evening as well as potential talking points. Please be mindful of the highlighted text as it is imperative that we do not close minds to the possibility for change. In the past, any type of criticism has been meant with obstruction and we would prefer that we can find a way forward and making lives for animals better here in Union County.

As storms pass through, consider that animals will seek higher ground, potentially entering your yard or roads in search of dry or warm areas. They may be displaced and injured. Inspect your surroundings for animals needing help once it's safe. Be cautious while driving due to increased wildlife on roads, including snakes escaping water. Wildlife may also seek shelter under or up inside cars.

Every Rescue is experiencing the same thing! This is why it is so important that people come out to city Council meetings and speak about why the anti-chaining law matters. It is the first step of many that we can do in our community to begin to control the population of animals. It is at crisis level.

The Monroe Animal Welfare Committee voted unanimously to present a proposed ordinance to City Council banning unattended tethering in the city limits. This is a huge step in improving the lives of Monroe’s companion animals. It will also improve quality of life in communities where 24/7 tethering is an issue.

What really bothers me about requiring nothing but state minimum codes is that it allows dogs to live a solitary life, languishing at the end of a chain. Dogs are social and genetically predisposed to be companions.

Am I wrong to say that NC State minimums of food, water & shelter are for all intents and purposes a different kind of “abuse”?

This petition was started a few years ago after a large hoarding case came to life (new story in comments). As you can see, Mr Yanacsek has been calling for a committee for some time and is fully invested in making it a success. The petition is still active and if you haven’t yet signed, I encourage you to add your name to the list as it’s important that leaders and this committee see how many people find the formation of this committee to be important.
