A message that I wish Union County/Monroe would hear and do something about. You seen this kind of “housing “all over the city and it’s getting worse because when we made it illegal to Tether a dog outside 24 seven, we didn’t add the ability for regular police officers to do something when they saw something. It’s time to close the circle.

When Is Housing Actually Humane?

Is this proper housing for an animal?

This is why clear, proactive ordinances matter.

Terms like “adequate shelter” and “humane care” need to be clearly defined. What does adequate shelter actually mean? Should it protect animals from rain, wind, extreme heat and cold? Should there be minimum space and safety requirements? What types of enclosures should be allowed?

We also commonly see animals kept outside on heavy log chains. If an animal is routinely tethered outdoors, should there be additional requirements for their safety and wellbeing? Including requiring them to be spayed or neutered unless there is a legitimate veterinary or breeding exemption? A tethered animal cannot control what other animals enter the property, creating opportunities for unwanted breeding and more unplanned litters.

These are the kinds of issues that should be addressed before an animal ends up suffering or entering an overcrowded shelter.

And there is a positive ending to this particular story: these dogs were eventually rescued and adopted. ❤️

But rescue shouldn't have to be the first line of defense.

It’s been a while since I posted, but there are several issues here in Union County that probably needs some discussion. First of all, there is a union county commissioners meeting this evening and change for Monroe is planning to have people come and speak to the deficiencies and animal care here in Union County. Additionally, it seems that union county has hired a new officer, who also happens to be the officer who was terminated in Salisbury when a video surfaced of him, abusing his K-9 companion.

 we are attaching information on the meeting this evening as well as potential talking points. Please be mindful of the highlighted text as it is imperative that we do not close minds to the possibility for change. In the past, any type of criticism has been meant with obstruction and we would prefer that we can find a way forward and making lives for animals better here in Union County.

Common sense programs and policies

As storms pass through, consider that animals will seek higher ground, potentially entering your yard or roads in search of dry or warm areas. They may be displaced and injured. Inspect your surroundings for animals needing help once it's safe. Be cautious while driving due to increased wildlife on roads, including snakes escaping water. Wildlife may also seek shelter under or up inside cars.

Every Rescue is experiencing the same thing! This is why it is so important that people come out to city Council meetings and speak about why the anti-chaining law matters. It is the first step of many that we can do in our community to begin to control the population of animals. It is at crisis level.
