With Oregon’s colder, wetter weather setting in, here’s a quick blanket reminder:
A damp horse doesn’t automatically mean a waterproof turnout has failed. Moisture can come from sweat or condensation, water entering around the neck, damaged seams or fabric, a deteriorating membrane, or an outer shell that has become saturated.
If you find dampness, remove the blanket, note where it occurred, and let it dry completely. Once dry, inspect and test that same area again.
Reproofing after washing helps the outer fabric shed water and can extend the blanket’s life, but it cannot repair holes or a damaged waterproof membrane.
“Waterproof” doesn’t mean indestructible or waterproof forever. Keeping blankets clean, dry, and regularly checked makes a difference.
