Apparently I’ll do just about anything to sell a book. 😂📚

Including borrowing the cutest mini and attempting an in-hand jumping photo shoot while holding my book.

First of all, this is much harder than it looks. It was also so much fun!

Second, Diva is the literal BEST. I was lucky enough to borrow her for these photos and she was an absolute professional. I can pretty much guarantee this little lady has NEVER annoyed a judge.

So, Diva does not need the advice, but the rest of us might.

I apologize for being a little MIA around here. Show season hit peak stress level, and apparently it’s more than a full-time job trying not to annoy the judges myself. 😂
Not entirely sure I accomplished that goal, but we survived.

Now that things have settled down a little, How to NOT Annoy the Judge is back in full social media swing, and we’re starting something new:

The people you surround yourself with matter. They should celebrate your wins, make the hard days more fun, and want to see you succeed without needing your success to be smaller than theirs.

And honestly, I think these green flags apply just as well outside the barn.

How to NOT Annoy the Judge: What We Care About Edition 🏆

Let’s start with things we do not care about: We don’t know what you paid for your horse. We don’t care where you placed last week. We don’t know whether your suit is custom, how your horse is bred, or who told you that you should have won. 🤷‍♀️

And we don’t need to know.

Here’s what we do care about:
What we do notice is how you enter the ring. Your confidence. Your preparation. Your presentation. Your sportsmanship. And most importantly, the condition and care of your horse. 🐴✨

Your résumé doesn’t enter the ring with you.

We can only judge what you show us today. 📝

I’ll be doing a book signing for How to NOT Annoy the Judge on Thursday, July 9 from 6:00–7:00 p.m. at the Deardorff Stable stalls. 📚🐴

Bring your book with you or grab one there. I’ll have hardcovers for $33 and paperbacks for $20 available at the signing.

I always enjoy running into Tim Roesink. If you’ve spent any time around Morgans, you know exactly who he is. Fiercely competitive and someone who takes this sport seriously while somehow still having fun doing it.

Earlier this year, Tim judged a horse show where our barn was exhibiting. After the show, I sent him a message thanking him for taking the time to judge. I try to do that whenever I can because I know firsthand how difficult it is to balance training horses, traveling, and judging. Those who make time to give back to the industry deserve to hear “thank you.” 👏

He replied, “Thanks…how do I get a copy of your book?” 📚

I’ll admit, I was pretty surprised he even knew I’d written one. Of course, I got him one as fast as I could.

Fast forward to last week when I ran into him again.
“I read your book,” he said.

Then came the words that made my stomach drop.
“I’ve got to tell you…I was highly skeptical about it.”

I swallowed hard, prepared for the worst. 😬
Then he smiled.

“But it was a really good read. You covered everything people need to hear and I enjoyed it.”
Thank goodness. 🙏

We talked about it for a while and before I walked away I asked, “Can I quote you?” 😂

It’s one thing to have people enjoy the book. It’s another when someone who has spent a lifetime at the very top of our industry tells you that you got it right.

And if Tim started out skeptical and still came away thinking it was worth reading, maybe you will too.
