Great Pyrenees Rescue, Montana

Great Pyrenees Rescue, Montana 501(c)(3) rescue saving Great Pyrenees and Pyr mixes across Montana and PNW. Volunteer-run, with a kennel tech providing daily care at our Missoula facility.
(3)

We help abandoned pyrs find loving homes. Fees: Puppies $400, Adults $275, Seniors $100. We operate under the guidance and umbrella of National Great Pyrenees Rescue, a 501C3 non-profit organization and in 2023 became a 501C3 ourselves. There is an adoption fee on the dogs that come through our organization - even though we are all volunteers and do not receive pay, we have expenses for the dogs -

vet bills, transport is not always free, sometimes we provide feed for foster homes, even printer ink - but we keep everything to a minimum, including our adoption fees. Our "standard" fee is $275, it may be less for a dog who will require meds or is significantly older, would be more for a puppy, usually $400, etc. We do require adequate fencing - yes, these dogs like to roam - and that is the point of the fencing requirement.

🥹🐾 OBI-WAN UPDATE 🐾🥹

We know it’s been a little quiet on the Obi-Wan front, so we wanted to give everyone an update on this special boy 🤍

The short version: he’s improving.

The long version: recovery is going to take time. A lot of time.

Obi-Wan has been slowly healing, but given the condition he arrived in, we expect it will be months before he’s truly back to normal. His skin, coat, body condition, and overall health all need time to recover.

But we’re finally starting to see glimpses of the dog hiding underneath all of that suffering 💛

He’s started giving tail wags.

He’s started barking.

He’s started demanding food and attention from his caretaker.

And honestly? Those might be our favorite updates yet.

Because those little things tell us he’s starting to feel better.

We also wanted to share that our original foster plans in California unfortunately fell through. While disappointing, we’ve come up with a new plan.

Our veterinarians have officially cleared Obi-Wan for the big transport, and we are now working on bringing him to Montana within the next couple of weeks.

By bringing him here, we’ll have access to our trusted veterinary team, more resources, and we’ll be able to keep a much closer eye on his recovery as he continues healing.

This boy has already come so far from the dog we first met in Tijuana.

These photos aren't the best, but look at that fur coming in!

Thank you to everyone who has followed his journey, donated, prayed, shared his story, and rooted for him along the way. We truly couldn’t do this without you.

The road ahead is still long, but for the first time in a very long time, Obi-Wan’s future is looking bright 🤍🐾

Stay tuned—we can’t wait to bring this boy home to Montana. 🏔️💛

🐾🤍 SOMETIMES THE KINDEST CHOICE IS NOT ADDING ANOTHER DOG 🤍🐾

We felt inspired to make this educational post after a recent conversation because it’s something we see from time to time, and it’s an important reminder for all dog owners.

Many people assume that if their dog seems lonely, bored, or enjoys other dogs soemtimes, the answer is to get them a canine companion.

But that’s not always what the dog wants.

And that’s okay. 💛

One of the most important things we can do as dog owners is listen to the dog we already have.

Sometimes dogs enjoy meeting and interacting with other dogs on walks, at daycare, or in neutral environments.

Living with another dog 24/7 is a completely different relationship.

We’ve seen dogs that love every dog they meet outside the home but become stressed, uncomfortable, or even aggressive when expected to share their living space with another dog full-time.

That doesn’t make them bad dogs.

That doesn’t mean they failed.

It simply means they’re communicating what makes them feel safe and comfortable.

As rescues, trainers, and owners, our responsibility is to set dogs up for success—not force them into situations we hope they’ll eventually enjoy.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is ask:

🐾 What is this dog trying to tell me?
🐾 What environment helps them thrive?
🐾 Am I making this decision for the dog, or because it’s what I want?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having an only dog.

Many dogs are happiest that way.

Just as there are dogs who thrive with canine companions, there are others who prefer having their people all to themselves.

The goal should never be fitting dogs into a picture-perfect household.

The goal should be creating the right household for the dogs we already love.

🐶 Do you have an only dog who prefers being the center of attention? We’d love to hear about them in the comments! 🤍

💔🐾 BUDDY HAS BEEN WAITING… AND WAITING… 🐾💔

For the last 6 weeks, Buddy has watched other dogs leave the shelter while he patiently waits for someone to choose him.

And honestly? We don’t understand why.

Buddy is the kind of dog that will make a family incredibly happy.

He’s friendly.
He’s smart.
He’s eager to please.
And he has so much love to give.

This young Shepherd/Pyrenees mix is looking for a family who wants a companion for life’s adventures. Whether that’s a hike, a walk around the neighborhood, a road trip, or simply hanging out in the backyard, Buddy is ready to be your sidekick 🥹

🐾 Neutered
🐾 Up-to-date on vaccines
🐾 Loves people
🐾 Enjoys other dogs
🐾 Would love a playful dog friend
🐾 Rides well in the car
🐾 Happy, affectionate, and fun-loving

Most importantly?

Buddy is READY.

Ready to leave shelter life behind.
Ready to sleep in a home.
Ready to have a family of his own.
Ready to be loved.

Every day he waits is another day this wonderful dog spends wondering why no one has come for him yet.

Let’s change that.

🤍🐾 FREYA IS READY FOR HER FOREVER HOME 🐾🤍

Freya has come such a long way since arriving in rescue, and now she’s ready to find the family she’s been waiting for 🥹

This beautiful 5-year-old Great Pyrenees/Anatolian mix is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines, potty trained, and ready for her next chapter.

The best way to describe Freya?

Sweet. Very, very sweet. 💛

She absolutely loves her people and is happiest when she’s nearby getting pets, attention, and affection. Honestly, she’s become quite the velcro dog with us and loves being part of whatever you’re doing.

🐾 5 years old
🐾 Spayed
🐾 Up-to-date on vaccines
🐾 Potty trained
🐾 Great with cats
🐾 Good with dogs, but can be selective about her close dog friends
🐾 Loves people
🐾 Sweet and affectionate

At the shelter, Freya was friendly with everyone she met, both people and dogs. In foster care, we’ve learned she does well with dogs but can be selective about which ones she wants to be best friends with—just like many adult dogs.

One of the best things about Freya is that she’s past the puppy stage. She still enjoys walks, adventures, and the occasional hike, but she doesn’t need constant exercise or endless entertainment. She’s a laid-back, go-with-the-flow kind of girl who is perfectly happy spending time with her family and enjoying life’s simple pleasures.

If you’re looking for a loyal companion who just wants to love and be loved, Freya might be your perfect match 🤍

🥾🐾 YES, WE REALLY DO NEED MORE DOG WALKERS & HIKERS! 🐾🥾

One of the biggest questions we received at Benefit Brew Night was:

“Can I come walk dogs?”

And the answer is…

ABSOLUTELY YES! 🥹🤍

Our dogs LOVE getting out for walks, hikes, pup cups, car rides, and one-on-one adventures. Not only is it fun for them, but it also provides valuable physical exercise, mental enrichment, and helps them decompress while they wait for their forever homes.

The reality is that we can never have too many volunteers helping get dogs out and about.

🐾 Walk a dog
🐾 Take a dog hiking
🐾 Grab a pup cup
🐾 Help with enrichment
🐾 Spend quality time with a rescue dog

Sometimes a single outing can completely make a dog’s day 💛

If you’re interested in volunteering, please fill out our volunteer application and we’ll be in touch!

Please share with your friends too! We’re always looking for more dog-loving people to join our rescue family 🐾🤍

🏡🐾 CALIFORNIA FRIENDS — CAN WE FIND JEMMA A HOME? 🐾🏡

Jemma is currently in a foster home in Apple Valley, California, and we’d love to find her a California adopter before bringing her to Montana. If the right home doesn’t come along, we’ll happily move her north—but we wanted to give our California followers the first opportunity to meet this wonderful girl 🤍

Jemma was pulled from a euthanasia list at a crowded California shelter and is now getting the second chance she deserves 💛

So far, her foster family describes her as:

🐾 Calm and easy-going
🐾 Potty trained
🐾 Loves people
🐾 LOVES affection
🐾 Smart and observant
🐾 Comes when called
🐾 Enjoys stuffy toys
🐾 Never says no to treats 😂

Jemma has that classic Great Pyrenees personality that so many of us love—thoughtful, gentle, intelligent, and happy to simply be near her people.

She can still be a little cautious in new situations, which is completely understandable considering everything she’s been through. But every day she grows a little more confident and a little more comfortable.

Most of all, Jemma just wants a family to love 🥹

📲 California friends, please share! We’d love to see Jemma go directly from her California foster home into a California forever home. If not, Montana will be waiting for her 🏔️🤍

🎉🐾 HANK UPDATE! 🐾🎉

We have some happy news to share…

Hank has officially been adopted! 🤍

And as if that wasn’t exciting enough, he went home with one of our female puppies, so the two of them get to grow up together and take on life’s adventures side by side 🥹

We’re happy to report that both dogs are settling in wonderfully. Their new family absolutely adores them, and it sounds like these two have already made themselves right at home.

There is nothing better than seeing rescue dogs go from uncertainty to being cherished members of a family 💛

Congratulations, Hank! We can’t wait to watch your next chapter unfold. 🐾🤍

Happy tails, sweet boy! 🎉🐶
