■Demodex looks worse than it is
Demodectic mange may be local or generalized and causes itching and rashes but is not contagious, a fact that clients can find hard to believe due to the sometimes severe-looking lesions, writes veterinarian Stephen Sheldon. Normally appearing in puppies around 6 to 8 months of age, demodex is easily diagnosed, and patients generally respond well to treatment. Vail Daily (Colo.)

■Pet food is vital part of treating and preventing disease
Pet food is an important tool veterinarians use to address illnesses in pets, including liver and kidney disease and allergies, writes veterinarian Ann Hohenhaus. Elimination diets are used to determine allergies in pets: By removing items such as beef, chicken, corn and wheat and replacing these with kangaroo, rabbit, duck, peas and sweet potato, veterinarians can determine the source of a pet's allergy. ■Lawmakers urge swift FDA action on dog treats from China
Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, has called on the FDA to fast-track the investigation searching for a link between chicken jerky dog treats manufactured in China and canine illnesses. Separately, Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, sent a letter urging the FDA to recall the implicated products. The FDA and AVMA have previously released alerts to make veterinarians and owners aware of the illness reports; until a contaminant is identified, the treats remain on some store shelves.

■Ohio is revising vicious-pet law
The Ohio Senate passed a revised vicious-dog law, allowing for animal-control officers to institute disciplinary measures, such as fines or felony charges, for any nuisance dog, regardless of its breed. The current version only allows for pit bulls to be immediately labeled as vicious, often hamstringing animal-control officers when the offending animal is not a pit bull. The bill now moves back to the state's House of Representatives. Dayton Daily News (Ohio)

The Food and Drug Administration posted two additional recall notices Wednesday listing dry dog food brands that were recalled because of high levels of aflatoxin, a fungus found on grains such as corn that can cause liver damage. Earlier this month, Cargill Animal Nutrition said it would recall dry dog food because of excess levels of aflatoxin. FoodSafetyNews.com (12/29)

Overweight pets face serious health issues
Pets that pack on the pounds may be cuddly and cute, but the extra weight can lead to debilitating illnesses that are costly to treat and can shorten their lives, veterinarians say. While genetics may play a role in about 5% of cases, most overweight pets can slim down when owners cut back on calories and increase exercise, says veterinarian Frederick Schuler.
