Such a wonderful victory for horses!! No more horse-drawn carriages in NYC! The pass of Romanch's Law to prohibit horse-drawn carriages also prohibits transfer of these horses into with the slaughter pipeline. MHWC is celebrating this important change for horses today. ❤️
Today, in a historic victory for animal welfare and public safety, the New York City Council passed Romanch’s Law, which will put an end to the use of horse-drawn carriages in the city beginning in 2028.
This long-overdue bill follows decades of documented welfare concerns and alarming incidents involving the city’s horse-drawn carriages, including horses collapsing and dying on city streets, traffic accidents caused by spooked horses, and, in June, the tragic death of 18-year-old tourist Romanch Mahajan.
In July, AWI testified in support of Romanch’s Law. We commend the council for passing this much-needed measure, adding New York City to the growing list of cities that have banned this outdated practice. Today’s vote will make New York a safer and more humane city for horses and humans alike.
