🐈‍⬛🐈 Fun Facts and winter shelter for cats 🐈🐈‍⬛

A simple, effective outdoor winter shelter for stray or feral cats can be built using a heavy-duty plastic storage bin or purchased as a pre-made heated house.

✔️ Size: Keep the shelter small (around 12" × 18" X 12" for one cat). A smaller space traps the cat's body heat much better.
✔️ Entrance Hole: Cut a single 5.5 to 6-inch circular hole. This keeps out larger predators like raccoons and helps block cold drafts. Position it a few inches off the ground to prevent rain and snow from getting in.
✔️ Bedding (Crucial): Fill the shelter halfway with straw. Straw repels moisture and traps heat.
🔴Never use hay (which holds moisture and grows mold) or blankets/towels (which absorb body heat and freeze).
✔️ Insulation & Drainage: Line the interior walls, floor, and ceiling with 1-inch foam insulation board or Mylar foil. Drill small drainage holes in the bottom so any condensation or moisture can escape.
✔️ Elevation & Weight: Raise the shelter a few inches off the ground on bricks or a wooden pallet. Weight the roof down with a heavy brick or paver so the wind cannot blow it over.

On this day in 1877, the organization now known as the American Humane Society was founded in Cleveland, Ohio. It became the country’s first national humane organization, beginning with a mission to protect working animals and livestock. 🐴❤️

And did you know they’ve been looking out for animal actors on movie and TV sets for decades? Their “No Animals Were Harmed®” program provides oversight of animal safety in filmed entertainment, and the familiar certification can appear in the end credits. 🎥🐶🐱

✅ Proof of Ownership: A registered chip helps prove legal ownership if an animal is stolen or involved in a custody dispute.
✅ Travel Requirements: Many international destinations require a specific type of microchip before a pet is allowed entry into the country.

🧡How it works:

▶️• Size and Placement: A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is placed safely under the skin between the shoulder blades via a quick injection.
▶️• Not a GPS: The chip contains no battery and does not track location; it holds a unique ID number that reads out when a shelter or vet passes a scanner over it.
▶️• Database Registration: The ID number must be registered online with the owner's current contact information through the microchip provider for the system to work.
