Outdoor fish, changing weather, general ick info:
> We suggest monitoring your outdoor koi pond temperatures.
Koi cannot digest food well when below 52 degrees F.
My thermometer says our parking lot ponds are surprisingly high (60's F), so we are still feeding Wheat germ & Fall foods.
Below 52 Fahrenheit I cease all feeding...
they'll still nibble on stuff they find themselves if they want.
> When I bring a fish in from outside in the fall I can often get ick, not sure why...
possibly carrying with them then it breaks out in the smaller tank... so we treat them with ick medicine whether we see it or not.
Ick looks like sugar crystals, small white specks at random across the body... fatal BUT easily treatable.
We sell malachite+formalin in a dropper bottle, or a large bottle for ponds.
> Indoor fish often get ick in the spring and fall too. I think its the day night temps are so different people forget and let the tanks chilled. Good idea to check your tank temp daily. Most community tanks I suggest 77 F., but it varies by species somewhat. Very high temps decrease the life span of your fish.

Fish won't eat!
1st things to check:
> Expiration date. Ever try a 73 week old bag of saltines? Delish.
> Temperature. I function at 65 - 85 ish F. Don't really feel like eating when its 55 or 95 out.
> Full ALREADY ! a fish's stomach is the same size as its eye
> BABYS. females (and some males) of cichlids (and other fish) carry babys in their mouths.
> Bloat! Possibly a gut infection involving bacteria sized parasites.
Treatment with Metronidazole often helpful and never hurtful.
Can happen to any group of fish,
most commonly Malawi cichlids that are not fed adequate greens.
Unless carrying babys, cichlids should always be eating.
Malawi and Tanganyika mouth brooding cichlids can easily get bloat,
often from low temperature and not enough greens in food.
