What a day in the grouse woods God blessed us with. We saw a momma moose and calf along the side of the road and as we were coming up to them The Bull showed himself. Between the 4 of us we were blessed to harvest eight Kings of the Woods and one WC walking over nine miles. Old man Kona who turned 11 this month pointed a grouse which I shot over him and he retrieved. I could not ask for better friends and dogs hunting hard. Noticing ALOT more red phase than in past trips to the UP.

Two walks 8 miles 20 flushers and so blessed to harvest four King of the Woods. One a gorgeous red phase.

Matt and I only got about a half day in hunting in the UP as we still have over 4 hours of driving today. Crazy windy all day with temps in the mid 50’s. Dogs were not scenting well. Pretty dry as area in moderate drought. 2 walks alittle over 3 miles. Diesel pointed two grouse and we got one and possibly a third grouse on the first walk. Matt and I each shot a Woodcock. We flushed a total of five Woodcock. Second walk we flushed four grouse.

Good morning training with Evan on steady to release. Still blazing hot at sunrise. Season starts in about a month.  Diesel did amazing. I need to force fetch Val this month, but she point beautifully and has had some nice retrieves, she is not consistent as she needs to be as she wants to run and find the next bird.

Gosh, I don’t think Woodcock wings are nearly as good as introducing puppies to lemon scent.

We have a male pup available from our Nova and Kona. They will be ready to go home Dec 28th. The sire Lord Du Bois Courcol is my best wild bird hunting dog ever. Even at 10 years old in South Dakota this year he had numerous beautiful points. Until he was eight years old he would literally point 70% of the wild birds on every hunt. Even hunting with lots of other types of Bird Dogs. Nova has pointed as many as seven Woodcock in a row with five other good bird dogs down. I shot my only Appalachia red phase bronze banded, Ruff Grouse over her. Please visit our website VA French Brittany for pictures of the parents.
