Jerry Lee on his “live find” during his first day of deer tracking. Again he stayed on point up to the end find even though the track was slow and a bit choppy. This early in the game your best ally is patience but once that tracking light comes on when the dog makes the connection, watch out, it’s go time!

To keep Jerry interested in the track I intermittently put down food along the track with the idea of eventually removing the food so it’s only deer odor that is tracked. Until dogs figure out finding the odor equals reward, tracking can be a bit slow but what’s key here is Jerry stayed on the track without much deviation. Day 1 of tracking. We’ll get there.

Imprint work by giving the “find it” command which is the first step in deer tracking once the odor is introduced.

After Jerry Lee passed his Level I obedience test yesterday we changed gears and started his adventure in deer tracking. Here it’s basic imprint work introducing Jerry Lee to the odor.

This last find of the day I thought I could trick Forest by putting the odor under the floor mop thinking maybe there would be a masking scent with the dirt etc. Well I thought wrong! Great one to end it on Forest!!
