๐พ Puppy Housebreaking & Training Tips ๐พ
Bringing home a puppy means building new routines together! Patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement help your puppy learn what you expect.
๐ช Take frequent potty breaks
Head outside first thing in the morning, after meals, drinking, naps, and playtime, and before bed. Offer breaks every 1โ2 hours while awake to startโeven sooner when your puppy is active or showing signs they need to go.
๐ Watch for their signals
Sniffing, circling, wandering away, or suddenly stopping play can mean itโs potty time. Supervise closely and limit access to extra rooms until your puppy becomes reliable.
๐ Reward right away
Use the same outdoor potty area and a simple phrase like โgo potty.โ Once your puppy finishes, immediately offer praise and a small treat while youโre still outside.
๐งผ Handle accidents calmly
Never yell, rub their nose in a mess, or punish an accident you discover later. Clean thoroughly with an enzymatic pet cleaner and adjust your routine to prevent the next one.
๐ก Make the crate a comfortable resting place
Introduce it with treats and meals, starting with the door open. Practice brief periods with the door closed while you stay nearby, then build up gradually. Never use the crate as punishment or expect it to replace potty breaks.
๐ Expect nighttime needs
Young puppies may need overnight bathroom trips. Keep those outings quiet and brief, then help them settle back to sleep. A puppy who wakes and cries may need to go outside.
๐ Keep training short and positive
Practice โsit,โ โcome,โ and responding to their name for a few minutes at a time. Reward behaviors you want to see again, and use the same cues throughout the household.
๐ฆด Redirect chewing and puppy biting
Keep appropriate chew toys nearby. Calmly offer a toy when teeth land on hands or household items, and briefly pause play if biting continues.
โค๏ธ Build confidence gently
Introduce new people, sounds, and experiences at a comfortable pace. Reward calm curiosity and avoid forcing interactions. Ask your veterinarian about appropriate socialization settings while vaccinations are underway.
Every puppy learns at a different pace. Accidents and setbacks are part of learningโconsistent routines and kind guidance make a difference!
