Not Every Lost Pet Search Starts With a Drone

We’ve been receiving a lot of calls recently from families with missing pets, and we want to explain how we approach each case.

A successful search is about much more than launching a drone. Every situation is different, and we carefully evaluate factors such as:

• The pet’s behavior and personality
• Where it was last seen
• Its likely direction of travel
• Whether it’s still moving or has settled into a hiding area
• Terrain, weather, and the amount of vegetation

These factors help us determine the best search strategy. In some cases, the drone is the right tool. In others, there are more effective steps to take first.

One of the biggest challenges this time of year is the dense summer foliage. Thermal drones cannot see through tree canopies, thick brush, or heavy vegetation. If a pet is hidden under dense cover, even the most advanced thermal camera may not detect it.

As the leaves begin to fall, visibility improves dramatically, and so does the success rate of aerial thermal searches.

We explain this to every caller because we want to set realistic expectations and recommend the approach that gives your pet the best chance of coming home. Sometimes that means flying immediately. Sometimes it means waiting for better conditions or focusing on proven ground-search techniques first.

Our goal has never been to simply “fly the drone.” Our goal is to bring your pet home using the right tools, at the right time, in the right way.

If your pet is missing, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’ll carefully evaluate your situation, explain your options honestly, and recommend the course of action we believe offers the greatest chance of success.

The drone is an incredible tool—but like any tool, it’s most effective when used under the right conditions.

Search Update: Case of the Missing Mini Horse 🐴😂

This morning we got a call from an old friend whose miniature horse had gone missing sometime before sunrise.

The investigation started with a few important clues… several strategically placed piles of horse p**p around the stable. 💩 Sherlock Holmes would have been proud.

We launched the drone, knowing we only had a short window before the rising sun would make thermal searching much less effective. We flew three missions, covering every field within about a mile and a half.

Nothing.

We told the owner we’d come back after dark when the thermal camera would have every advantage. In the meantime, she kept searching on foot.

Then we got the text…

“We found her!”

Great! Where was she?

🥁 Cue the drum roll.🥁

Locked inside the closet of the boarders’ tack room. 🤦🏻‍♂️😂

Apparently, someone had left the tack room and closet door open the night before. Our little escape artist wandered in looking for snacks, the door swung shut behind her, and she spent the day patiently waiting for room service.

The tack room had been checked that morning… but nobody thought to open the walk-in closet because, well… who expects to find a horse in a closet?

So today’s lesson is officially being added to the SkyScout Animal Search training manual:

✅ Check the fields.
✅ Check the woods.
✅ Check the ponds.
✅ And apparently… check the closets. 🤣

We’re thrilled this story had such a happy ending. Sometimes the best search is the one that gives everyone a good laugh afterward!

Glad she was found safe—and we’ve all learned that miniature horses don’t always read the same search manuals we do! 😄

🇺🇸 4th of July Pet Reminder 🐾

Fireworks may be fun for us, but they can be terrifying for our pets.

✔️ Keep pets indoors before dark.
✔️ Make sure collars and ID tags are on and up to date.
✔️ Close windows, doors, and pet doors.
✔️ Turn on a TV or radio to help mask the noise.
✔️ Never bring pets to fireworks displays.

A few minutes of preparation can prevent days—or even weeks—of searching for a lost pet.

From all of us at SkyScout Animal Search, have a safe and happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸🐶🐱
