Captive Bred Fish in Stock!

Over the last decade there have been leaps and bounds made in the marine captive bred fish space. We received a beautiful shipment of captive bred creatures from Biota a few weeks ago. Now these guys are babies that had just arrived so they are still small and stressed from shipping, but we just couldn't wait to show them off!

RARE FISH ALERT!!

We haven't seen masked swallowtail angelfish in Quite some time! Right now, we have a limited quantity of both males and females available at the shop. What makes these fish so desirable is that they are generally considered to be one of the few reef safe angelfish that we typically find in the hobby. This is because they are mainly a plankton eater found in a bit deeper water, so they aren't going to be looking at your corals as a food source quite as much. This fish is much harder to come by than the typical swallowtail angelfish as it is typically found in the northern Philippines up to Japan and is really only seen seasonally.

Looking for a tall freshwater plant? Checkout Echinodorus red chameleon!

- This is a great background plant that reaches up to 12-18 inches. Many times, with taller swords we do recommend having decent water flow, so they don't accumulate too much hair algae growth on them.

- This plant when thriving in higher light situations will exhibit brighter red coloration whereas in other scenarios it may have greener leaves.

- Sword plants typically are a root feeder, so it is recommended to use root tabs to help keep these guys healthy.

5 Awesome Freshwater Fish at Aquarium Arts!

1. Agassizzi Cory - Corydora are a very popular bottom feeder for beginner freshwater aquariums. This variety features a nice black spotted pattern. We typically recommend keeping them in at least a group of 3 but the more the merrier if your filtration and tank size allows.

2. Dwarf Flag Cichlid - This is one I personally haven't had in the shop although they are a fish that was incredibly common in the early days of the aquarium trade.

3. Dorityi Rainbow - Rainbowfish have some of the brightest colors you can find in the trade. These guys are typically peaceful and get fairly large making them a great choice for larger community or semi aggressive setups.

4. Galaxy Rasbora - These are incredible popular especially for small micro and nano tanks. We have found them to thrive the most when being fed daphnia.

5. Harlequin Rasbora - These were one of the first fish that I owned. When fed well, the orange gets so bright and intense that it is almost red.

1. Burning Banana Styloconiella
A bright yellow coral we have been growing for a couple of years now. These thrive in moderate to high light and generally grow encrusted onto rocks.

2. Cynarina
A great showpiece coral that comes in green and red varieties. These guys thrive in Low light conditions.

3. Alveopora
These are one of my favorite LPS corals simple because of the movement they add to the aquarium. These guys do very well in systems

4. Avatar Chalice
This is another Captive grown coral we have had for a few years. It showed up in the hobby a few years back and we have been in love with it ever since!

The Poor Man's Scolymia!!

Lobos have become one of my favorite show piece style corals in recent years. What I love most about them is the shear amount of color varieties. We commonly get some red pieces in from Indonesia and Fiji that have excellent colors. We also bring in some nice multicolored pieces from Australia.

For care on lobophyllia, I typically recommend keeping them in areas of the aquarium with moderate to low light and moderate to low flow. When I was younger, I used to be rather careless working in the shop and would often bump into lobos super hard while cleaning. Obviously, this would do damage to many corals, but especially on big fleshy single polyp LPS corals, this can be the difference between success and loss. Because they are an LPS coral you should pay close attention to your alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium.

I like to place them on the rock structure using aquarium safe epoxy and glue typically at or near the base. If you want them in the sand bed, I would still find some rubble rock to attach it to keep it a bit suspended from the sand where waste can accumulate, or critters can irritate the tissue. This is something I've been recommending for many aquarists recently despite the coral type.

A personal Favorite Plant!

Anubias Nana Golden has become one of my favorite plants that we stock! It is a fantastic low-tech plant for beginners!

When we tlk about low tech plants we are typically referring to plants that don't require incredibly strong light, CO2, or intense fertilization. Many but not all of these plants are what we refer to as an epiphyte.

Epiphytes primarily pull the nutrients they need from the water out of a root offshoot called a rhizome. Be careful not to bury the rhizome or the plant will die. Plants like this Anubias do very well when attached to rocks or driftwood. You can use aquarium safe glue to accomplish this.

Here's how we Acclimate Freshwater Fish!

Our preferred method for acclimating any fish is the drip acclimation method. This method gets your fish used to all of the parameters in your aquarium, not just the temperature.

1. Float the bag in the Aquarium to get used to temperature.

2. Cut fish out into acclimation container (5-gallon bucket works great).

3. Use an airline tube to siphon water from your tank into the container. Tie a loose not at the end to control the rate of flow. You can also use a drip acclimation kit as shown in the video.

4. Bail water out and allow the acclimation to go for around 30 minutes to an hour.

5. Remove the fish using a net or a cup and add them to the aquarium!

5 Insane Fish here at Aquarium Arts!

1. Male and Female Swallowtail Angelfish: These are one of my favorite fish to bring into the shop. The male zebra color is amazing. You can keep a male with multiple females.

2. Watanabe Angelfish: People ask about the little one in our reef display all the time. We finally have a few to choose from down at the shop!

3. Blonde Naso Tang: Can't beat this fish at show size! Great algae eater and beautiful colors!

4. Tiger Goby: This is a fairly sought after sand cleaner. The stripes on these guys are insane!

5. Red Velvet Fairy Wrasse: A rare fairy wrasse found in the Maldives! It's not often we get these guys in so now is a perfect chance to snag one!
