Wasabi Peas and Sweets are the facility’s two longest residents, and the facility truly cannot believe these girls are still in their care. Both are spayed, fully vetted, and able to cross state lines. They have waited far too long, and both are officially in code red.

This is the only open‑intake shelter for the entire Eastern Shore of Virginia. That means:
- Strays, court cases, emergencies, owner surrenders
- There is nowhere else for these dogs to go on the Eastern Shore.

The team recently welcomed Ginger, a 3‑year‑old sweetheart who came to the shelter as an owner surrender. Her original owner passed away, and she was left in the care of an elderly relative who simply couldn’t meet her needs. Ginger has been grieving that loss deeply, and she’s been very sad since arriving at the shelter — so we’re rallying together to help her find the stability and love she deserves.

Ginger is full of life, personality, and heart.
Here’s what they have learned about her:

- Her temperament — She loves dogs and toys, and she’d thrive with a dog who enjoys sharing space or a calmer companion. She does get the zoomies, and honestly, it’s adorable.
- Her breed traits — She’s a bully breed girl with plenty of muscle up front, so she can pull — but a harness quickly corrects that.

🐾 Volunteers Make Friday Playgroups Possible!
Thanks to a recent increase in volunteers, the Eastern Shore Animal Control Facility is now able to host more Friday morning playgroups — a huge win for the dogs who benefit from extra enrichment, confidence building, and social time.

Volunteers have been incredible in helping with cleaning, offering social interaction, and safely assisting with playgroups so the dogs can enjoy positive, healthy experiences.

🌟 Want to Volunteer?
Volunteers must be 18 or older and pass a background check.
After your background check clears, a short orientation will be scheduled before you can begin.

Q: When you are handling a hoarder case, do you have any mental health resources available for these individuals?

✅ A: Yes. When the deputies respond to hoarding cases, we do have mental health and supportive services available. Our primary partners are the Community Services Board (CSB) and Adult Protective Services (APS).

Community Services Board (CSB) — provides mental health support, and in some cases their involvement can be mandated through the courts.

Adult Protective Services (APS) — another important starting point when adults may need additional assistance or oversight.

They have used both CSB and APS in past cases to help ensure individuals receive the support they need while the officers work to protect the animals involved. Our approach is always respectful, solution‑focused, and centered on long‑term wellbeing for both the people and the animals.

Grundgetta is a full‑blooded Cane Corso, just under a year old, and currently available for adoption through the Eastern Shore Regional Animal Control Facility.

💙 Her Story
Grundgetta was found in severe emaciation, struggling to survive. The facility has worked hard to help her gain healthy weight, rebuild trust, and learn that food comes consistently. She is energetic, playful, and finally stepping into the confident young dog she was meant to be.

🐕 Behavior & Training
- Loves other dogs, but due to her size she needs the right match
- Hard no for cats or small animals (strong prey drive)
- Must be fed separately or monitored during meals
- Learning leash manners and improving daily
- Extremely smart — she knows sit, down, stay, paw, and is working on rollover
- Thrives with structure and consistency

🏥 Medical Notes
- Grundgetta has cherry eye and will likely need surgery in the future
- The facility cannot fund spay surgery, so she must be adopted within the facility’s jurisdiction
- This includes adopters living between the Chesapeake Bay Bridge‑Tunnel (Eastern Shore side) and the Maryland state line
