Pride and Joy Dog Training

Pride and Joy Dog Training Hi, I'm Katie! I love your dog already. My mission is for you to enjoy many blissful, fulfilling years together.

I’m here if you want peaceful walks, relaxing visits with friends, quiet evenings - all without sacrificing your dog’s need to be a dog.

If your dog comes to you for comfort, I’m here to tell you it’s okay to comfort them.

You’re not going to reinforce their fear or coddle them or make them soft. I don’t know where this idea came from, but it needs to go away.

The fact that your dog sees you as a source of comfort is a GOOD thing. It demonstrates the bond you’ve created with them. When you respond to their request for comfort, it shows them that you’re listening, which only further deepens your bond.

Is it still important for your dog to learn the skills to cope with stressful things in life? Sure. But in the meantime, we don’t need to leave them hanging.

Candi got scared of the wind knocking over a patio chair in front of her. Her response is pretty reasonable, I think. And so when she pressed her body against mine and pawed at me to pet her, I gladly did.

I’m honored that she sees me as a comfort and that she chose to communicate her need so clearly.

Here’s why it works👇

Scatter feeding is one of the easiest ways to mimic natural foraging and burn mental energy. Just treats and grass.

Bonus tip: If your dog eats kibble, and you have a lawn, you can just toss part of their meals in the grass! Nature’s snuffle mat.

(No pesticides or other harmful chemicals, please!)

I’ve worked with some seriously overexcited, reactive, and anxious dogs. So I understand the overwhelm of a dog who brings as much frustration as joy. I know the embarrassment of leash pulling and barking past disapproving neighbors. The isolation of postponing visitors. The distraction of barking during a Zoom call.

I also know the relief that comes with training!

But training can be tricky to figure out. The internet is full of confusing and conflicting information. I’m here to curate that information for you. You bring the dog, I’ll bring the gameplan.

Comment ZOOM for a free chat over Zoom about your dog and whatever you’re going through!

Unpopular opinion: Not every dog is a social butterfly.

I work with a lot of reactive dog guardians who compare their dog to the calm golden retriever at the brewery, and feel like they've failed.

There is nothing wrong with a full life of exploring quiet, open fields on an extra long leash, running and digging in their own back yard, and napping with their favorite person in the safety of their home.

Some dogs are genuinely happier when they're not being forced into situations that scare them.

Save this for the next time you feel guilty about it.

I’ve met too many guardians who’ve been made to feel like bad dog owners because they break some arbitrary rule a trainer handed them twenty years ago. Your dog jumps on the couch? Your dog sleeps in your bed? Your dog gets table scraps sometimes? Your dog does parkour off your legs when you come home? Cool.

Follow along if you want dog training guidance from someone whose style is less “drill sergeant” and more “let them be a dog”

Maybe we all need to start believing in ourselves as much as Candi does.

Bonus tips ⬇️

* This type of gate is called an "exercise pen." It's technically meant to be used as an enclosure/play pen, but it doubles as a portable gate that you can bend in whatever shape you need. Just search for "exercise pen" on Chewy or Amazon.
* Make sure you get one that's tall enough. They come in all different heights, so choose one that your dog can't jump over.
* Mine lives right next to the door. When I see it, I use it. Out of sight really is out of mind with this stuff.

I post this kind of stuff a few times a week. Worth a follow if you have an overexcited or reactive dog!
