Does your dog bark at you when they want something? 🐕💥

Food.
Attention.
The door opened.
You to throw the ball.
You to get up.
You to give them what they want.

That’s demand barking.

And the hard truth is… sometimes we accidentally teach it.

Your dog barks → you give them attention.
Your dog barks → you throw the toy.
Your dog barks → you open the door.

From your dog’s perspective, barking worked.

So how do we help?

🐾 Don’t reward the barking by immediately giving them what they’re asking for.
🐾 Teach an alternative behavior — like sit, place, or simply being quiet.
🐾 Reward calm behavior and appropriate ways of asking.
🐾 Be consistent. If barking works sometimes, your dog will keep trying.

The goal isn’t to make your dog silent 24/7.

The goal is to teach them how to communicate without demanding.

And remember: if you’ve been rewarding the barking for months, you can’t expect it to disappear overnight.

Clear expectations + consistency + reinforcement of the behavior you actually want = progress. 🐾

🐾 DOES YOUR DOG SEEM UNSURE OF EVERYTHING?

Maybe your dog is perfectly happy at home, but the second you take them somewhere new, they’re suddenly a completely different dog.

They might…

• Get nervous around unfamiliar people
• Spook at new or unexpected sounds
• Hesitate to walk into new places
• Be uncomfortable on different surfaces
• Freeze or try to avoid unfamiliar situations
• Stick close to you when something feels scary
• Seem unsure around other dogs or new environments
• Need a LOT of encouragement to try something new

If this sounds like your dog, they may not be “stubborn” or “dramatic” — they may simply need more confidence.

Confidence is something we can build through training and everyday experiences. 🐶

Instead of forcing a nervous dog into a situation and expecting them to “get over it,” we want to teach them that new things are safe and that they can handle them.

That can mean introducing new environments, surfaces, sounds, people, objects, and situations at a pace your dog can successfully handle.

The goal isn’t to make your dog fearless.

The goal is to help your dog feel capable.

A confident dog is more willing to explore, learn, listen, and work through unfamiliar situations — and those skills can make a HUGE difference throughout their life. ❤️

🐾 “WHY DOES MY DOG ONLY LISTEN WHEN I HAVE TREATS?”

I get this question ALL the time.

And honestly? Treats aren’t the problem.

Food is a great training tool — especially when you’re teaching a dog something new. But if your dog only listens when they can see a treat in your hand, they may have learned:

👉 “I’ll do it if I see what I’m getting.”

Instead, we want to teach:

👉 “I listen because that’s what I’ve been asked to do — and rewards can come AFTER.”

There are a few reasons this can happen:

🐶 The reward has become a bribe.
If your dog sees the treat before they perform the command, they may start waiting to see what’s in it for them.

🐶 The behavior hasn’t been reinforced enough.
Dogs need repetition and consistency before a behavior becomes reliable.

🐶 The reward hasn’t been properly faded.
You shouldn’t have to carry a pocket full of treats forever. As your dog understands the behavior, you can gradually make the reward less predictable.

🐶 Your dog may not fully understand the command yet.
If they only respond in your kitchen with treats but struggle everywhere else, the behavior may not be fully proofed against distractions.

The goal isn’t to stop rewarding your dog.

The goal is to teach your dog that listening is always worth it — even when they don’t see the reward coming.

🎯 Don’t bribe the behavior. Build the behavior.

🚨 PUPPY POTTY TRAINING TIPS! 🚨

Potty training can feel like a full-time job when you first bring home a puppy 😂 but consistency is what makes the biggest difference!

Here are a few tips to help set your puppy up for success:

🚽 TAKE THEM OUT OFTEN
Especially:
• First thing in the morning
• After eating or drinking
• After waking up from a nap
• After playing
• Before going into the crate/after
• Before bedtime

🐾 USE THE SAME POTTY AREA
Taking your puppy to the same spot can help them understand what you’re asking them to do.

🎉 REWARD IMMEDIATELY!
The second your puppy finishes going potty outside, praise them and give them a treat. Don’t wait until you’re back inside — they need to understand exactly what earned the reward!

👀 SUPERVISION IS KEY
If your puppy is loose in the house, keep an eye on them. Sniffing, circling, wandering away, or suddenly stopping what they’re doing can be signs they need to go.

🏠 ACCIDENTS WILL HAPPEN!
They’re puppies — not robots! 😂 If you catch them having an accident, calmly interrupt them and take them outside.

❌ DON’T PUNISH ACCIDENTS AFTER THE FACT
If you find a mess that already happened, your puppy won’t understand why they’re being punished. Clean it thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner and move on.

🧼 CLEAN ACCIDENTS PROPERLY
Dogs can smell things we can’t. An enzymatic cleaner helps remove the odor so your puppy isn’t encouraged to use the same spot again.

⏰ KEEP A ROUTINE
The more predictable your puppy’s schedule is, the easier it becomes to predict when they need to go.

❤️ AND REMEMBER…
Potty training isn’t about expecting perfection overnight. It’s about management, consistency, supervision, and rewarding the behavior you want.

🐾 WHY IS THE “PLACE” COMMAND SO IMPORTANT? 🐾

“Place” is so much more than teaching your dog to stay on a bed or cot. It teaches boundaries, impulse control, patience, and how to settle — all skills that carry over into everyday life.

Teaching a solid place command can help your dog:

✨ Stay out of the way while you’re cooking or cleaning
✨ Settle when guests come over
✨ Stop constantly following you around the house
✨ Practice impulse control instead of immediately reacting to everything
✨ Have a clear, consistent spot to go when they need direction
✨ Learn that they don’t always need to be doing something

The goal isn’t just “go to your bed.” The goal is teaching your dog that sometimes the best choice is to simply relax and wait.

A reliable place command can make life with your dog calmer, safer, and much more manageable — especially in a busy household.

And remember, commands aren’t built in one session. Consistency and repetition from the owner are what turn training into real-life reliability. 🐕‍🦺

🐾 Meet Izzy! 🐾

Izzy is a Belgian Malinois mix, approximately 1½ years old, who is currently working with me through private adult basic obedience training! 🐕‍🦺

We’re working on building a solid foundation of everyday obedience, including engagement, place, leash skills, recall, impulse control, and overall reliability. The goal is to create skills that Izzy and his owner can continue using in everyday life—not just during training sessions.

Izzy is a smart, energetic guy who has been a lot of fun to work with, and I’m excited to see his progress as we continue! 💙

Every dog learns differently, and training is all about finding what motivates your dog and building from there😁

Your Dog Isn’t Trained After One Session 🐾

One training session can teach you a lot.

But it won’t magically change your dog overnight.

Training is a process, and consistency is what creates results.

Your dog needs repetition.
They need clear expectations.
They need practice in different environments.
And most importantly, they need you to follow through.

My job is to teach you how to communicate with your dog and give you the tools to succeed.

Your job is to use those tools.

The dogs who make the most progress aren’t necessarily the easiest dogs — they’re the dogs whose owners are consistent, patient, and committed to putting in the work.

Training doesn’t end when the session ends.

That’s when the real work begins. 🐾

🐶 One of the biggest mistakes new puppy owners make is skipping crate training.

I get it—it can be hard to hear your puppy cry, and it feels easier to let them follow you everywhere.

But by avoiding the crate, you’re often creating bigger challenges later on.

When introduced properly, crate training helps build independence, teaches your puppy how to settle, keeps them safe when you can’t supervise, and makes potty training much easier. It also teaches them that being alone for short periods is okay, which can help reduce the likelihood of separation-related issues as they grow.

More importantly, life happens.

Your dog may need surgery one day. They may need to stay overnight at the vet. They may need to be boarded while you’re on vacation.

If the first time they’re confined is during one of those stressful moments, it’s going to be much harder on them.

Crate training isn’t about taking freedom away—it’s about giving your puppy the skills to be successful. A dog that’s comfortable relaxing in a crate is often calmer, more confident, and better prepared to handle the unexpected situations life can bring.
