This is a wonderful breakdown of raising meat rabbits. I personally process Rex at 16 weeks when they are 6.5-8 pounds, and their pelt is in it's prime for tanning. Rabbit is a great source for protein! We all know the saying "it tastes like chicken" is applied to a lot of different meats, but rabbit tastes BETTER than chicken!💯😊

Is rabbit meat the answer to our protein predicament?
No rabbit will never be beef, but that doesn’t mean you can’t put something else on your fork!
Let’s talk about.
A single breeding trio, two does and one buck, can produce between 150 and 400 pounds of dressed meat in a year, depending on the type of rabbit breed you choose and intensity of your breeding schedule.
A healthy doe averages 4-6 litters per year, with 6 to 12 kits per litter. Kits are typically harvested at 8 to 12 weeks of age, at 5-6lb live rabbit yields a dressed carcass of roughly 3-3.5lbs.
See how quickly those numbers are adding up?
Rabbits don’t require acres of grazing. They have one of the highest meat to bone ratios and feed converters. And most folks can keep rabbits quietly in their backyards, without permitting or huge infrastructure. You don’t need fancy processing equipment or machinery to harvest their meat and you can cook rabbit in any recipe as a chicken substitute.
We haven’t even touched on their furs and manure byproducts, a side hustle that pays for itself.
So I’ll ask you again, why aren’t you raising meat rabbits yet?

Pedigreed Rex 👀🏡

Bucks and does from 3 separate litters. The Chocolate Otter and Red are 8 weeks and 3 days old today. The rest are from 2 different litters of 17 week old growouts. In those 2 litters, there are lilacs and broken lilacs. They are all very heat hardy, and friendly! The 17 week olds have also all been to a rabbit show and the judge had great comments!

I have a few keychains left from a Chocolate Otter litter. They are so soft!

Pm for more information. Thank you!

Update: I will keep updated pictures on this post of the remaining available keychains. Thank you!

Today was a challenge for sure! It was a hot, humid day. The index reached 115°🥵 sustained for over 5 hours. The challenge? One of my 3 fans was not working when I went out to check on them at 105°. I do not know how long it was off, but it was hot in the rabbitry. The rabbits without the fan did great, though!🙌 They were happy when it was back on💯

I thought that was it. I was wrong. Two hours later, when the ice bottles and water bottles needed switched out and refreshed I discovered the freezer died. There were no frozen bottles left, they had all thawed🫠 The new freezer is currently plugged in so that at midnight I can put everything back in. This includes rabbit meat, hides, heads, and ice bottles.

Through all of this, my rabbits were absolute rockstars!! They handled the heat very well, even though they were not in ideal situations throughout. Not one in heat distress, not a single one. All 20 are tucked in for the night with fresh water bowls and bottles, hay, pellets, and fresh picked comfrey.

This could have ended badly for one or all of them. The only loss was that I missed out watching the local fireworks display with my family. I am grateful and at peace about having high standards for heat hardy stock🙌💯 This is a true testament that all the hard work towards hardy stock is 💯 worth it!!
