Trust me!! We want every dog to be calm, comfortable, and relaxed during the grooming process. I have groomed thousand and thousand of dogs in my 25 years as a . Realistically the majority of dogs put up at least a little fight. It’s ok! They can put up a fight but it cannot work in their favor. I will keep saying it! The ” ” method has no place in According to this dog screaming and flailing is telling me, “no thank you, I don’t want you to do that” and when a dog says no thank you, you are supposed to stop what you are doing. If you stop what you are doing the dog learns that screaming flailing gives them power. Thus rewarding the dog for that behavior. So guess what they will continue to do?? Yes, scream and flail and uneasily work themselves up. Your dogs nails will continue to grow. Long nails cause arthritis, the nails can grow into the pad, the nails could break. I’ve seen it all! These conditions cause a lot of pain. While taking a ton on time to practice the “fear free” method could eventually work, in the meantime, your dog is at health risk and in my experience is never actually learning to accept the handling at all. In this video, Indi is learning several things. It is her job to stay on the boundary that I’ve put her on. She will get cookies if she keeps it together while I handle her. I will not let go of her paw when she says “no thank you”. It is my job to remain calm. There is a ton of body language in this video. You will also notice it is hardly the nail trim itself that has her upset. It is me holding the paw. At no point is Indi in pain nor is she so stressed that she cannot take food. She is below threshold. Please help your by teaching your dog that being restrained is just a part of life. Your dog, veterinarian, and groomer will thank you! Thanks for watching! I’ve had some requests on how to properly brush a dog. In this video I go over a brief tutorial on line brushing to make sure the coat is Matt free all the way down to the skin. You’ll also be able to see the difference between fur that is not mattered and the fur on the face which is matted. Please feel free to pop questions in the comments below.

In this video I am working with Indy, a young lab that I have been training with for several months learning basic obedience. We have a great relationship! She was scheduled for a grooming. My wonderful groomers went to trim her nails and she started screaming and flailing. Unfortunately, we usually do not have time to stop and do this with every dog that says “no thank you” to a nail trim. Nail trims must get done for the health of the dog and we teach them that we stay calm and do not give up easily. Since Indy was enrolled in Day Academy, I asked the groomer to stop so I could make this video. This is not a “fear free” or “force free”video. You will see that Indy says “no thank you” many times. As you continue to watch, you will also see that most of her tantrums happen when there is no event.
