Rescue can be a lot of things - first line of defense to keep animals WITH their owners or keeping them out of the pipeline or shelter system or the last option for complicated or special needs animals.
Today, two deserving complex Beagle girls are on their way to their third chapter after their home has experienced challenging life circumstances.
Aspen and Vicky are currently on their way from VA to Illinois, overnighting along the way. I'd like to share their stories and if THESE stories don't pull hard on your heart strings, you need to assess your ❤️!!
We first heard about Aspen. A 5 year old lemon beagle with IVDD. She had surgery (twice, the second time to clean out remaining material per the surgeon)and regained full mobility of her rear legs but needs help expressing her bladder daily. Whew. That's a tall order for most of the dog world. But her only other option was euthanasia and the seemed awfully unfair when she had fought and beat most of her challenges. And is only five.
As we were coordinating transport, the owner asked if taking Vicky was an option. Vicky is HARDER! Vicky is a 9 year old Beagle born in a research lab(Envigo) and released when she was two. So she's been safe and adopted for seven years(and the girls have been together for five years). But she carries the trauma from the years in the lab. She is debarked and has PICA, the girl will chew anything and everything. We had to research PICA.
These two should be the definition of special needs rescue in the dictionary. And as a bonded pair? Multiple rescues had turned them down individually. But their owner cared enough to take on a special needs research lab beagle and provide the surgery for Aspen to help give her the best outcome possible. Sometimes life presents challenges that change everything you know and these girls could no longer be appropriately supported.
Welcome Aspen and Vicky. 💕Aspen is on three meds and we will need to get a neuro consult within thirty days to confirm continued rehab options.
