Sometimes it's more than just bad breath.
An astute owner recently brought this horse in because she noticed a suspicious odor coming from his mouth—especially while riding. She had also noticed that he was slower to eat treats than usual.
That attention to a small change in behavior turned out to be important.
During his dental examination, we found a diastema (an abnormal space between teeth) that had become packed with foreign material. This particular space was difficult to flush, but our new rigid oroscope and oral irrigator helped us complete the task.
Dental problems aren't always obvious. Changes in eating, dropping feed, odor from the mouth, resistance while riding, or subtle changes in behavior can sometimes be the first clues that something isn't right.
