IMPORTANT INFORMATION for pet owners about Screw Worms!

The New England area is currently at low risk, but there is still a risk under certain circumstances. Here is what you need to know:

The infections detected are localized to South Texas. The primary way it would reach us is through the transport of infested animals. This could happen through an adoption of pets from the South or from friends or family visiting with pets from the affected area. If other animals that your pets are exposed to happen to be infected it could easily be spread.

Look for foul smelling-wounds or discharge that doesn't seem to be healing normally.

Prevention is key! Screw Worms are the larvae (maggots) of the Blowfly! Keeping pets on CONSISTENT flea and tick prevention helps minimize the tiny bites that attract these flies in the first place and will help keep your loved ones safe. As you can see in this article from the American Veterinary Medical Association, there are many ways to keep your pets safe and calm during the celebration of the 250th anniversary of Independence Day this year, but for many of them prescription medication is needed.

Be sure to order yours early so you can be sure to have it when you need it. Those big booms often start much earlier than the actual 4th of July and there are a lot of requests that come in so don't wait until the last minute!
