Answered a fb post about a chick hatched out in a classroom, with splay leg. It was either find someone to try & give it a chance or to head to a farm to cull.

Without any information or seeing the chick, I went to scoop it up, as I was in the area anyways.

The splay looked better than I imagined upon first sight. Although, upon further investigation when home, it looked to have an issue at the hock/knee joint area. Whether a break or an injured tendon, it wasn't looking great. I wonder if this is something that can be "corrected" especially at 2 weeks old.

It was placed into a brooder by itself. While I hate to have a solo chick, trampling or other risks outweigh this. I placed shelf liner on the floor, to help the chick have better traction to get around. It hops around on 1 leg just fine.
It is eating and drinking, and with some rest, used the leg. The foot is also working well.

So, now we wait. The patience this has brought me!
I do not know the future of this chick. One other similar chick I once cared for, eventually perished from it. Although I do know its likelihood of life has greatly increased.

If there is a heartbeat there is hope! So, I will try for you little baby! ☺️

Let's talk feed 😁

I have always purchased feed from TSC and other supply stores. Typically, Purina layer crumbles or all flock crumbles... My birds are not super picky, although they prefer certain brands over others, and my layers absolutely hate pellets. πŸ™„

Well, after a lot of research, feed threads, etc., I decided to try and make the switch to a local, better quality, feed. More so, I had time to check it out before running out of feed and running to the easy option.

Protein amounts were the same, other ingredients are comparable, and the price was a bit cheaper. Now the true test of seeing what the flock thinks!!

Upon opening the bag, I immediately could see and feel the difference. The feed looked higher quality, with real looking ingredients, and I could see and feel moisture I have never had with store bought feed.

The pictures speak for themselves. I am sure you can see which is which πŸ˜‰So go visit Thibodeau's Achen' Bacon Farm INC and try some for yourself!

p.s.- my pickiest eaters have been digging right in for several days now.

I cannot get over this little lavender-looking kiki baby πŸ˜πŸ’œ

The tiny size, the fluffy cheeks, the soft coloring… I am officially obsessed with these birds. Every hatch makes me fall more in love with kikis, honestly. They have so much personality packed into such tiny little bodies ✨πŸ₯

I swear their colors somehow make them even more magical.

Anastacia said one color simply wasn’t enough πŸ’πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ₯š

One sweet girl, THREE different egg colors, because egg color is influenced by genetics, bloom layers, and how pigment is deposited during the laying process. Nature is pretty amazing sometimes ✨

From creamy mocha, soft olive or blue to speckled beauties, every egg basket from her feels like a little surprise πŸ€ŽπŸ’šπŸ©΅πŸ₯š
