"We found that fearful dogs had less socialization experiences (p = 0.002) and lower quality of maternal care (p < 0.0001) during puppyhood. Surprisingly, the largest environmental factor associating with noise sensitivity (p < 0.0001) and separation anxiety (p = 0.007) was the amount of daily exercise; dogs with noise sensitivity and separation anxiety had less daily exercise."

"Our cats are living longer than ever, thanks to the life we are helping to give them: good food, staying safely inside, environmental stimulation, and, yes, love. Go ahead, find the data—but I firmly believe that love helps all of us last longer. The mixed part of that blessing is that we are seeing feline cognitive dysfunction (FCD) more often.
According to Dr. Danielle Gunn-Moore of the University of Edinburgh's Royal School of Veterinary Studies in the UK: “Twenty-eight percent of pet cats aged 11 - 14 years develop at least one old age related behavior problem and this increases to more than 50 percent for cats over 15.” "
Little is known or has been researched about FCD but we'll present what we have been able to find in the March issue of BARKS.

Friends, the outpouring I've received about my struggle with depression, and how it affects those of us the veterinary field, has been incredible, and I thank you. (You can read it here: http://veterinarybusiness.dvm360.com/putting-my-darkness-light.) Now I have something to offer to help my fellow veterinary professionals and those of you who work and volunteer in animal shelters and rescue groups.

Our friends at the Maddie's Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida have opened their incredible online course on dealing with the anxiety, stress, depression, and emotional numbness to all who work in the veterinary and sheltering fields. You can sign up for "Compassion Fatigue Strategies" here:
