Jones Animal Behavior

Jones Animal Behavior Offering virtual cat and dog behavior consultations and educational events as well as Lewis County NY area in-person services.

My goal is, quite simply, to help companion animals by educating the humans they interact with. I work with cat and dog owners by providing realistic, tangible advice that best fits their needs and lifestyle. I offer private, one-on-one sessions, day training (where I work with your pet while you are at work!), group classes, and more. I also provide educational services to animal care and control

professionals, professionals who encounter animals in their daily work, community groups, or anyone looking for education on animal behavior and training related information.

Dian (Fossey) and Claudette (Colvin) (Australorps) are trying to figure out what the eff Jeannette (Rankin) (silver laced Wyandotte) is doing!! Jeanette/Jan has repeatedly had a thing for that plastic bag so I put it inside the coop for her yesterday. She really liked digging around in it and eventually settled in and laid an egg in it 😳 Sometimes enrichment is based on what the animal tells you they like 🤷

And yes, the girls have a radio that plays country music in their coop.

Cats on counters: some humans think it is bad while others think it's fine. If humans can't agree, how can cats be expected to "know better"?

Option A: squirting, spanking, scolding, or b***y trapping cat for being on the counter appears to work bc they take off when you "catch" them in the act.

Outcome: they are running away from YOU bc they fear YOU but they've learned nothing about the counter. Minimal human effort + minimal time = minimal behavior change + relationship damage + cat stress.

Option B: give them an alternate, nearby, spot of a similar height and repeatedly redirect them to and reward them when they choose that spot.

Outcome: they learn the new spot scratches the same itch PLUS it gets them attention and treats! More human effort + more time = significant behavior change + stronger relationship + zero stress to your cat.

You have options. Trish's mom chose option B and is seeing results in one week 😻

Casper (R) and his new sister Winnie (L) were having some integration trouble and Winnie was getting annoyed with house guests. We determined Winnie was stressed due to conflict with Casper plus she was a really smart and really bored kitty. This is them now. Instead of chasing and harassing Winnie, Casper is much more chill. And instead of avoiding and running away from Casper, Winnie is much more confident.

I donate services for cases like this through Humane Alliance of Rescue Trainers who arrange behavior support through approved rescues to help adopted pets. Their mom, though, is the one who did all the work. She communicated with me regularly and followed my advice closely. Congrats to this whole family who is loving a much calmer and happier life thanks to HART!
