This weekend I had the pleasure of judging Ranch Trail for the Rockie Mountain Saddle Club. The pattern included dragging a log, dismounting to pick up all four of the horse’s feet, roping a dummy, and several technical obstacles that challenged each horse-and-rider team.

One of my favorite parts was watching how every competitor made the same pattern their own. The little details—transitions, accuracy, efficiency, and partnership—are what separate a good run from a great one.

Judging is one of the best ways to sharpen my eye as a trainer, and I always bring those lessons back to my clients.
