The 2026 theme for vet tech week, developed by NAVTA (National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America), is: "Credentialed Veterinary Technicians: Endless Compassion, Expert Care; Celebrating the Soul of Veterinary Medicine." They are the hands that heal, the hearts that comfort, and the voices that advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Veterinary technicians are educated medical professionals and the primary workforce behind patient care. In Kentucky, becoming a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) requires graduating from an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Technologist program, passing the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE), and obtaining a license through the Kentucky Board of Veterinary Examiners. Every year Vet Techs must complete continuing education before renewing their licenses.

Veterinary Technologists may hold a bachelor's degree in veterinary technology, while Veterinary Technicians commonly hold an associate degree.

At Metropolitan Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Service, our LVTs put their knowledge and skills to work every day. They triage critically ill patients, calculate medication doses, pull blood, perform in-house diagnostics, take radiographs and run advanced imaging like CT and MRI. Our veterinary technicians closely monitor every pet receiving sedation or anesthesia and ensure their comfort during procedures. Vet Techs perform many procedures themselves such as placing central lines and nasogastric tubes, administering blood transfusions, performing wound management and even running CPR.

Their work goes far beyond medical procedures, though.

Vet Techs comfort frightened animals, celebrate recovery milestones, reassure worried families, and offer compassion during heartbreaking goodbyes. They recognize subtle changes that can mean the difference between life and death, advocate for their patients, and stand beside families during some of their most difficult moments.

To our incredible MVSES Vet Tech team: thank you for your knowledge, resilience, and unwavering commitment to our patients. Your work may not always be visible to our clients, but its impact is immeasurable. You are more than a helping hand. You are brilliant professionals, an essential part of the care team, and a lifeline for the patients who depend on you.

We see you. We appreciate you. We are grateful for you.

Meet Me MONDAY!

Meet Dr. James Redmon, DVM

Dr. Redmon is a proud Louisville native! After graduating from the University of Louisville, he attended Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine for his veterinary training. Then Dr. Redmon completed an internship at Louisiana State University the following year.

He has been involved in emergency veterinary medicine since he was 18yrs old, working through several roles in the veterinary industry. Dr. Redmon started at MVSES when the emergency practice opened 17 years ago and is very proud and grateful to be part of such an amazing team of client support professionals, nurses, doctors and specialists.

Dr. Redmon enjoys working with many species, with a special passion for horses. When heโ€™s not practicing medicine Dr. Redmon enjoys making music, reading, woodworking and spending time with his own animals; he has two dogs, two barn cats and two miniature donkeys.

Metropolitan Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Service is proud to have Dr. James Redmon as part of our team!

Veterinary visits can be overwhelming for some pets. While we do our best to keep pets calm, comfortable, and feeling safe while under stress, there are a few things you can consider doing as well!

๐Ÿช Bring their favorite toys & treats
Familiar items and high-value rewards can help create positive associations with the veterinary visit. (You can bring yourself a treat, too. You deserve it๐Ÿ˜‹)

๐Ÿ’Š Ask about anxiety medications
For pets who become especially fearful or anxious, your veterinarian may recommend giving your pet medications before the visit to help take the edge off. These medications should always be discussed with your veterinary team first!

๐Ÿˆ Try pheromone sprays or collars
Pet-specific pheromone products may help some dogs and cats feel more comfortable. You can ask your veterinary team whether this is appropriate for your pet.

๐Ÿ  Practice at home
When your pet is relaxed, gently practice handling their ears, paws, mouth, and body. You can also practice holding them or positioning them similarly to what may happen during an exam. Pair these exercises with treats and praise to help make handling feel routine and positive! Having a pet that understands being examined is a safe experience helps everyone!

โš ๏ธ One important reminder: ALWAYS check with your veterinary team before offering food, treats, medications, or other products before an appointment. Some patients need to fast before anesthesia or certain laboratory tests, and some products or techniques may interfere with the care your pet needs. We are happy to advise you when you're making an appointment with our specialists!

A little preparation at home can go a long way toward making veterinary visits less stressful for you AND your pet!
