Before sending your puppy or young dog to training, take some time to build a strong foundation at home.

Simple food games can help develop focus, engagement, and problem-solving skills that make future training easier. Exposing your dog to new environments, surfaces, sounds, and experiences can also help build confidence and resilience as they grow.

Most importantly, focus on your relationship. Your dog should learn that good things come through you, whether that's food, play, guidance, or access to the things they enjoy. A strong bond creates a dog that's eager to learn and work with you.

A few things you can start today:
• Hand-feed part of your dog's meals to build engagement.
• Take short trips to new places and reward calm, confident behavior.
• Practice simple commands for meals, toys, and doorways to reinforce that paying attention to you unlocks rewards.

Where are the eyes, the ears, and the tail? No, not literally.

Dog training is more than just successful commands. As trainers, we have to pick up on behavioral queues that tell us if the dog is motivated and focused. So we look for where the eyes, ears, and tail are in relation to the dog's attitude.

Are the ears perked up? Or are they drooping? Is the tail wagging? Are the eyes locked on the trainer and the task at hand? Or are they avoiding eye contact?

Next time you're practicing at home, pay attention to the eyes, the ears, and the tail. If they tell you motivation is slipping, bring in extra positive reinforcement. Throw an easy fetch. Scratch an ear. Tell them "good dog."

Then see the difference.

Don't let a setback be the end of the story.

After a few negative experiences, Mead lost some of his excitement for his sport. Mary Palmer wanted to help him enjoy the field again, so the two have been training together at The Farm for the past six months.

Since then, Mead has made great progress. He's still excited to see Mary Palmer, but he's learned to control that excitement and stay focused when it's time to work. Best of all, his enthusiasm in the field is back.

We're proud of how far this team has come, and we can't wait to see what they do at their next competition.
