Shelter animals dressed up like Dolly Parton for Dolly Day, with one hope behind the wigs and sparkle: that more people would notice the pets still waiting for a home.

The tribute took place on Sept. 25. Written as 9/25, the date is a nod to Dolly’s song “9 to 5.”

Shelters found different ways to turn the day into an opportunity for adoption.

At the Houston SPCA, visitors could meet pets with Dolly-inspired names, including Jolene and Rhinestone. In Florida, Lake County Animal Shelter set adoption fees at $9.25. A Chicago shelter offered the same fee and waived it for anyone who donated a book.

The books were another tribute to Dolly, who spent years helping children discover the joy of reading.

But her love of animals was part of her story, too. Her Doggy Parton pet collection helped support a Tennessee rescue that cares for animals in need.

That’s what makes the shelter celebrations feel so fitting.

Behind every costume was an animal who still needed someone to choose them. The photos brought a little joy to the day, while the adoption events gave people a reason to walk through the doors and meet them.

Dolly gave people plenty of reasons to smile.

For the shelter animals dressed in her honor, the best tribute would be a family to go home with.
