Helloooo once again to all of our followers and community ❤️

I know we’ve been a little quiet on social media lately but we’re still here😬.

Even though we are currently closed to intakes, we are still contacted daily by people needing to surrender their guinea pigs—have found pigs, are moving and can’t take them, and other situations where they can no longer provide care.

As rescuers, not being able to help is one of the hardest parts of what we do. And being closed to intakes means we have had to say no a lot lately 😢

Over the weekend, we were contacted about a particularly difficult situation. I can’t share many details just yet, as it is still ongoing…

But what I can say is—meet Ernie🥰

This scraggly little man has already stolen all of our hearts. After hearing his story and seeing his condition, one of our SCGPR team members is rearranging cages and making space to foster him on his journey to recovery.

And if he’s this adorable now—with his skinny little body, patchy fur, and that crazy messy hair—just imagine how incredible he’s going to look (and feel!) once he’s healthy, filled out, and glowing.

If you’ve followed us for a while, you know we don’t often ask for donations.

But if you’d like to support Ernie—and all of the guinea pigs in our care—here are a couple ways to help:

❤️ Amazon Wishlist (most helpful right now):
https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2KMTQ3Y7WLGIZ?ref_=wl_share

❤️ Donate via PayPal:
https://www.socalguineapigrescue.org/donate

these links are also in our bio and will be posted to our stories as well

Purchasing from our wishlist helps not just Ernie, but all of our foster pigs, as supplies can be distributed where they’re needed most.

Thank you for being part of this community and stay tuned for updates on Ernie
❤️

Hellooooo 👋

We know we’ve been a little MIA lately but we’re still here!

Behind the scenes we’ve been busy updating and redesigning our entire website and giving our Petfinder a refresh too. Scroll through this post to see some of the recently added cuties currently looking for homes.

Then head over to our website to check out the new look:
https://www.socalguineapigrescue.org

If you scroll down toward the bottom of the page you’ll see all of our current adoptable guinea pigs.

We also want to share an important update.

SCGPR is currently completely closed to all new intakes, including emergencies. This includes shelter pigs, owner surrenders, and other rescue situations.

The only exception is if you adopted from us previously. Per our adoption contract, those piggies always come back to us and we will absolutely take them back right away.

The reason for this temporary closure is that I (Valerie) recently found out that I will need hip replacement surgery. Because of this, we need to focus on caring for the guinea pigs already in the rescue and simply cannot take in any additional animals right now.

We know this may be frustrating for people who are trying to find help for guinea pigs in need, and we truly wish we could say yes to everyone. Thank you for understanding while we navigate this.

We’re still here, still caring for the pigs already in rescue, and still working to find them amazing homes. 💛

Meet Velvet & Dottie 💛

These two are part of the group of nine guinea pigs we took in on New Year’s Eve.

When they arrived, they were in really rough shape — emaciated, missing fur, soaking wet… it was very heartbreaking.

We’ve been a little quiet about them, but behind the scenes our fosters have been working around the clock to get everyone stable, comfortable, and feeling safe.

These girls are the oldest of the group and are currently on pregnancy watch through March 6. So far we’re cautiously optimistic that they’re not pregnant — they’ve gained weight, but it looks like healthy weight from finally having consistent food and care 🥹

Dottie (on the right) is the oldest of the group — we think she’s seen some things. She has signs of old injuries, but she is the sweetest, most gentle soul.

They’re not out of the woods yet, but they are so much better than where they started.

Thank you to our fosters and everyone who supports our rescue — this is what you make possible.

We’ll keep you posted as we get closer to March 6 🤞
These two will be looking for a forever home or another foster to take over and continue their healing journey ❤️

The little one has a lot to say this morning. After the middle of the night feedings and early morning feedings the humans are tired but babies are doing well. We’ve caught them trying to nibble on hay and pellets which is a good sign. ❤️

Yesterday I said to the team that “we are closed for intakes unless it’s an emergency”
Well, these two were an emergency! We were contacted by a member of the community, whose guinea pig gave birth last night and passed away, leaving behind two orphans. This person did not breed these pigs intentionally they were given a pair of pigs and told that they were both female, which obviously turned out not to be true. They were devastated to walk in the room last night and find the mama pig already passed with these two little ones left behind. Fast forward to a few hours later, and they are in our care. While we do not have any nursing mamas, and neither do any of the other local rescues, we do have supplies to feed them guinea pig formula. While it’s true that guinea pigs are born able to eat hay and pellets, they still should be nursing from mama for up to three weeks. These little ones were certainly hungry by the time I got them here. We will be doing around the clock feedings. We’ve also already put them in with another female.(not nursing) so that they will have adult company, which is also very important for baby guinea pigs. Keep your fingers crossed for these little guys and we will update you all later.

💗 We’re so excited to be partnering with Sunshine Rabbit Center again! 💗
We are incredibly grateful to their team for opening their space to us once more. Our last event there was such a wonderful day, and we’re truly looking forward to seeing the Sunshine Rabbit Center crew again — along with so many familiar faces from our community. It was so special last time to finally meet in person so many people we’ve chatted with online for years, and we can’t wait to do that all over again!

🐹 Guinea Pig Adoption Event
📅 Sunday, February 15
⏰ 12 PM – 4 PM
📍 Sunshine Rabbit Center
4202 Atlantic Ave, Ste 201
Long Beach, CA

Come meet adorable, adoptable guinea pigs and chat with our rescue team about care, housing, and what adoption through SCGPR looks like. We’ll also be hosting a raffle, offering adoptions, and sharing education about guinea pig care.

🛍️ Shop Local & Support Rescue!
Sunshine Rabbit Center has expanded their product line to include items for guinea pigs, and we strongly encourage everyone to check out their shop while you’re there. Shopping their store is a wonderful way to support a local small business that actively supports rescue animals, and we’re so grateful for that partnership.

✨ IMPORTANT ADOPTION INFO ✨
If you are hoping to adopt, you MUST fill out our adoption application online ahead of time.
We cannot process adoptions on the spot without a completed application, so please be sure to apply in advance if you’re interested in welcoming a piggy into your home.

✂️🧼 GROOMING & BOAR CLEANINGS (Donation-Based)
We will be offering nail trims and boar cleanings for a donation during the event.
👉 These services are highly encouraged between 12 PM and 3 PM, as availability may be limited later in the day.

✨ Meet Biscuit & Sugar ✨

These two sweet girls are recent rescues from the West LA shelter. Biscuit (the one with more white, on the right) and her bestie Sugar are estimated to be around 2–3 years old, and they’ve already stolen our hearts. 💕

West LA shelter is currently overflowing with guinea pigs, and when volunteer Rosie offered to temporarily foster these girls, we knew we had to say yes. We had committed to taking Biscuit and Sugar before our large New Year’s Eve intake, and even with everything happening, honoring that commitment mattered to us.

These girls are curious, outgoing, and social, and would make wonderful piggies for a loving family. They’re settling in beautifully and showing off their confident little personalities already.

Biscuit and Sugar are currently safe in foster care, but we are actively looking for a more permanent foster or forever home where they can continue to thrive. If you’ve been thinking about opening your heart and home to guinea pigs, these two could be the perfect match.
