Someone was DUE today 🫡 I usually like to keep shorter cycles so that horses never look “due” for a trim! As soon as the distortions begin, damage is happening!! But sometimes life gets in the way and we gotta miss a couple days 😅

Casting—the barefooted horse shoe! 🐴👊

Casting is a wonderful tool that is easy to apply, lasts 3-6 weeks, and can do just about anything a horse shoe can. 🙌 They can be used with flat pads & wedges and Dental Impression Material (DIM), and are great for stabilizing unstable hooves such as ones with stubborn cracks and/or laminitis. ✨

While casting is not a long-term solution for the sake of the hoof’s health, they DO still provide sole, frog, & digital cushion stimulation—especially when used with DIM applied to the heel bulbs & collateral grooves 💪

This horse has been growing out his quarter cracks from shoes beautifully, except for this one stubborn crack. We decided to float the quarters & apply a cast to keep the hoof wall stable in order to give this hoof a chance to grow in strong!

Kicking myself for not taking before pictures of this guy’s overgrown feet! 😅 This mustang is usually on 4 week cycles, but life got in the way so we saw each other 6 weeks later. Luckily he has good diet & lifestyle and distortions were kept to a minimum 🐎 luckily we’re back to 4 weeks for maintenance!

I’ve been so excited to add Renegades to my list of favorite hoof boots 🥾Renegades are easy to put on, easy to clean, and are oh-so cute! 🥰

Renegades are a great hoof hoot choice for horses on shorter trim cycles (5 weeks max), and/or have weekly maintenance rasps by their owners! 🫶

Progress on some hind feet for this older gentlemen with crazy quarter cracks! 😱 At the time of his shoe removal, his mediolateral balance was so off and he had such difficulty holding his hind legs up from discomfort—even just half an inch off the ground for a second or two 😞…but he’s come so far! 🫶

For the past 2 months, he has had 3 monthly trims where we rehabbed his feet using only the rasp for 2-3 seconds at a time, fixing the mediolayeral imbalance little by little until he built up the ability to keep his legs up! We finally got the nippers in today. The trim may not be as perfect as I’d like, but I’m just thrilled we’re here now! 😁

M/L imbalanced, especially in the hind end, can be disastrous for the delicate joints in their hind legs. 😬 Shout out to the PHCP group for pointing out that being medially tall in the hind heels can cause stifle stiffness & locking up—I mainly targeted my rasp on balancing those heels and it made his comfort SO much better! 😌

Some highlights from early this week ✨ I need to take pictures more often, I’m glad I at least snapped a few 📸

This is a funny time of year where soles are shedding, cracks & chips wanna pop out, and desert thrush is trying to take hold! ☀️ I’m enjoying it feeling reasonable out until it gets miserably hot!

Dry summer hooves still need thrush treatment, NOW as much as ever!! 🐴🌵🏜️

During the dry season, bacteria and infection is much harder to detect 🔍 the hooves will callous over, making it difficult to exfoliate and properly clean out thrush & bacteria once its present!

Bacteria 🦠 that causes thrush & WLD can very easily enter the central sulcus & white line, where it takes advantage of the hooves “shriveling” up from the dryness, embedding deep into the hoof tissue. 😱 this can also lead to stubborn cracks.

Even with rock-crunching hooves, horses need proper hoof care year round 🗓️

Some stills from the founder case in the previous reel 😄 This is only a month & a half in, I can’t wait to see how they look later this year.

I’m always comparing pictures of my work. Putting the images together really shows not only the progress, but also allows me to really analyze things I can do even better in the future 🙌

Most of all, I’m just so happy this guy is feeling well enough to play in turnout with his friends! How the horse feels is the true feedback ✊
