I don’t care what anybody says, losing a dog really is the worst.

Not because we’re being dramatic, but because they’re woven into every part of your day. The little clicks on the floor, the eyes watching you cook, the way they show up for you when nobody else knows you’re struggling. Then one day it’s quiet, and that quiet is loud.

Grief hits in weird places. You reach for the leash. You listen for nails on the hallway. You catch yourself saving a bite, or stepping around a spot that isn’t occupied anymore. And the hardest part is that the love doesn’t stop just because they’re gone. It stays, and it aches, and it proves how real that bond was.

If you’re going through it right now, I’m really sorry. You loved them, they knew it, and you gave them a whole life where they were someone’s everything. If you want, tell me their name and your favorite thing they used to do. We can hold the memory together for a minute.

Let them sleep on the bed.

Let them stretch out like they own the place, steal your pillow, and sigh like they worked a very long day. One day, those tiny sounds — the quiet breathing, the little paws against the blanket, the warm spot they leave behind — will be the things you miss the most.

We worry so much about keeping everything clean and perfect. But love is never tidy. Love is fur on the sheets, a cat tucked into a dog’s side, and a quiet room that feels safe because your animals chose you as home. These nights are the real luxury — not something money buys, but something trust gives.

So take the cuddle. Take the extra minute. Care for them with good food, vet visits, and the basics that keep them healthy. But tonight? Tonight, just let them sleep where they feel happiest.
