Sad to say our big green iguana and RARN poster lizard Godzuki crossed the Rainbow Bridge very suddenly nearly three weeks ago.
His regular vet made it clear that at 28 years of age, Zuki was about as old as he could get. And with a failing liver, fading eyesight, and some kind of lung infection that precipitated his death, he was living on the fumes.
But Godzuki didn’t ever seem that old, even after having lost a good part of his tail to infection two years ago. To his very last few hours, he still had a zest for life, and enjoyed his food, the sunshine, music, the chatter of humans around him. He savored the caresses we gave him, the snoot boops, his rest inside his mancave. He chuffed his contentment when he was picked up and cuddled. His affection for his ordinary humans was inspiring.
He came to us as a scrawny, worm-ridden juvenile from the mean streets of Hollywood, rescued by a couple of kind young men who called around to vet clinics and shelters as they had no clue how to care for the creature. When they brought him to my house and saw my friendly big female iguana, they told me that if we took him in, he would be in Heaven.
He had heaven here for nearly 28 years.
Godzuki’s absence in this reptile-loving household is palpable. But so is and was the grace of his life here. He truly was one of the most wonderful creatures we’d ever had a chance to be around.
Wishing you all the love of a good reptile.
Goodbye, Godzuki.
