I hope this time is filled with connection, curiosity, and moments that strengthen your bond.

Grateful for the dogs who’ve taught us, and for the people who care deeply enough to show up, to listen, learn, and grow alongside them.

Happy Holidays from Canine in Action 🤍🎄

If you wait for stress signals before stepping in, you’re already too late.

By the time you see lip licking, whale eye, leaning away, or tucked tail, the dog is already uncomfortable.

Two big risks:

1. You accidentally reinforce stress behaviors.

If the dog learns:
“I lick my lips → my owner rescues me,”
those stress signals become a strategy, not just an emotion.

Next time?
They’ll go bigger if the initial signal doesn’t work.

2. The dog escalates when subtle signals no longer get relief.

The cycle becomes:
subtle signal → ignored → stronger signal → ignored → snap/growl.

This is how friendly dogs slowly become “unpredictable.”

STAY TUNED - the next tip will show a solution dogs truly learn from and easy for people to apply!

Want your dog to handle rain better?

Start by pairing rain with something they love.
Play a favorite game, scatter treats, or go on a fun sniffy walk during light drizzle. Keep it fun and short and end it while they’re still happy! Rain eventually stops predicting discomfort and starts predicting good things.

Your dog gets too rough…

Give a quick, sharp “ah!” (like a littermate would), freeze, and end play. When your dog calms down or gently checks in with a lick, mark that moment, just say “yes!” and resume play.

This teaches:
🐾 Biting = stops the fun.
🐾 Gentle play = keeps the fun going.

💡 This builds bite inhibition and teaches emotional control through natural play feedback.

Want your dog to get smarter, braver, and more focused on walks?

Every walk should be a mini lesson in adaptability, confidence building and problem-solving. You can adjust the challenge to fit your dog’s age, health and ability, because remember it’s not about how far you go, but how much they learn along the way!

Don’t make it about the miles, make them think and have fun together!

🧁🐾 How are you celebrating your dog’s birthday?

I had to share this, fun and thoughtful way Bev’s humans celebrated this little queen’s special day! 😍

🥕✨ For her 2nd birthday, her humans helped her bake “Bev’s Carrot Cakes” homemade treats she gifted to all her dog friends!

So happy seeing Beverly, who was raised and trained through our Chihuahua program living such a happy (and clearly well-fed) life 😂💛

Turn Your Dog Into a Dramatic Black and White Masterpiece Using ChatGPT!!

We had a blast creating these 10 bold, high contrast portraits of our clients dogs - and the best part? You can do the same for YOUR dog from home 🎉

Featured Dogs: Ozzy, Buddy, Stormy, Theo, Cali, Bronson, Madi, Ralphie, Diego and Bobby

🐾 Here’s the exact message you can type into ChatGPT (yes, just paste this in!):

“Capture a high contrast, close-up, black, and white portrait of my dog’s face using a 35mm lens in 4K HD quality. Focus on the front of the head, highlighting a proud expression. Include water droplets on the face, with only the face visible against a black shadow background. Ensure the profile appear sharp and detailed. Use a 4:3 aspect ratio.”

Yes, absolutely! 🙌 Capturing is one of our go-to techniques, especially when luring or prompting is not working. It’s a game-changer for dogs who are fearful, overstimulated, highly independent, not food-motivated, mistrustful, or physically limited.

But capturing isn’t just for tricks...you can use it to teach:
🕵️‍♂️ Self-initiated exploration
🧘 Calmness and relaxation
🧩 Problem-solving behaviors
🤝 Building engagement with humans
🎯 Voluntary behaviors that are unnatural to dogs
💛 Building trust

Have you tried capturing before?

Champion isn’t just lounging - he’s practicing one of the most advanced skills a dog can learn: doing nothing on purpose.

One of the most overlooked parts of training is emotional regulation. When a dog is overexcited, anxious, or overstimulated, learning becomes exponentially harder.

Teaching a dog to pause and choose calm behavior is powerful. And it doesn’t start with commands, it starts with how you shape their environment and respond to their energy.

💡Dog Training Tip: The next time your dog is calm, catch it, mark it, and reward it - you’re shaping more than behavior. You’re shaping the mind.
