I contemplated making this post and sharing the video for numerous reasons.
However, I decided that none of those reasons outweigh the benefits of showing how I helped Shiloh deescalate his intense energy in this situation.
Before the video started, he was laying down as I sat beside him. We had just finished a hike and bike ride. After doing so much activity, his muzzle had moved and needed to be repositioned. As I moved it just a bit, Shiloh tried to attack immediately.
First, I guide Shiloh in a way that gets him to lay on his side. Next, I pull out his tucked tail so his whole body can begin to relax - from head to tail. I massaged him as we took time to breathe together. I did not move or stop massaging until his breathing slowed down, almost matching mine.
Once I knew that Shiloh was now in a calm state of mind and would not make any fast movements or jump up, I calmly moved away.
He stayed laying down and eventually picked his head up as you can see in the end of the video.
We watched the rest of the surf competition and hiked back up to the car, living in the moment each step of the way.
This was my second day working with Shiloh and introducing him to new ways of releasing his energy, increased exercise and being properly communicated to in ways that he can understand (no words — all energy, body language and touch).
We are making excellent progress since this day (check out my IG live that I posted last night on the beach with Shiloh).
I love what I do and I love sharing what I do with others. I love teaching people how to communicate with their dog no matter what the case is (Green, Yellow or Red Zone).
I can not imagine myself doing anything but working with animals furrrever. 🌺
